Chapter 7
I thrashed in the hospital bed, trapped in nightmares.
When I woke with a gasp, I saw an elderly man with silver hair sat by the bed, discreetly wiping his eyes,
In the corner stood a man with an impassive face.
Seeing me awake, the old man clasped my hand. “Sweetheart! You’re awake! I’m your grandfather, Silas Blackwood.”
I frowned until I saw the man behind him. “Miss, I contacted you about your family. Remember? This is Mr. Silas Blackwood, your mother’s father.”
At the thought of mother, my tears broke free. “Grandfather… Mom’s gone… they flushed her ashes…”
“I’m sorry… I couldn’t protect her… I’m so sorry…”
The old man broke, holding me. “My girl! My precious girl!”
“I came too late!”
Finally, he looked up, wiping tears. His kind eyes held a terrifying ferocity.
“Kaelen. Do it. Make those who hurt my daughter and granddaughter suffer. Make it soon.”
The man in the corner, Kaelen Vale, stepped forward but didn’t respond.
He looked only at me. “Do you want him dead?”
My grandfather paused, conflicted.
But seeing my shorn head, anger flashed. He held it back, terrified of losing me again.
He watched me anxiously.
I met his gaze, eyes burning with hate. “He deserves to die!”
Kaelen handed me a report. Instinctively, my hand went to my stomach.
“Thirteen weeks. Bleeding like that… it held on.” His voice was flat, detached.
My grandfather spoke gently. “Sweetheart… if you want to keep it… I’ll raise it as my own.”
I shook my head fiercely. “No.”
I wouldn’t carry Callahan’s seed. Ever.
Did I imagine it? A flicker of satisfaction in Kaelen’s icy eyes? But it was gone soon.
After grandfather left, Kaelen remained.
I studied his face, words failing me.
Finally, I mumbled, “Thanks… for saving me. We’re even.”
Kaelen scoffed. “Even? I saved your life. You stole my wallet.”
My cheeks burned. Back then, Mom and I had just been kicked out. After paying rent, we had $20 left.

Chapter 7
We found him bleeding on our doorstep.
Desperate and hungry, we’d searched his pockets.
“Sorry… we were starving.”
We’d tried to return the money later, but he’d vanished.
Kaelen raised an eyebrow. “Wouldn’t dare. Now I’m your bodyguard. You’re the boss.”
He frowned. “You still don’t know who your grandfather is?”
