Chapter 9
I didn’t hesitate. My palm cracked across her face. Again. And again.
Grandfather beamed. “Feel like hitting anyone else, sweetheart?”
Instantly, the black suits moved. Doors slammed shut. Guards surrounded the room, weapons visible.
Panic erupted. Voices pleaded, “Mr. Blackwood! We never touched her! Please!”
Those who’d mocked me dropped to their knees, slapping their own faces. “Miss Blackwood! Forgive us! We were wrong! Spare us!”
The guys who’d assaulted me trembled violently, trying to hide.
Kaelen moved. A blade flashed. He moved through them like a ghost.
Screams erupted as hands flew to groins.
Kaelen returned, cleaning his knife. To his men: “Useless now. Ship them to Bangkok. Put them to work.”
Parents begged grandfather. “Mr. Blackwood! Please! Our only sons!”
“Not Bangkok!”
Grandfather just smiled, leading me to a chair. “My man’s… particular. Doesn’t listen to me. Beg him.”
They turned to Kaelen. He grabbed one guy’s hand. Sliced off a finger.
A bloodcurdling shriek filled the air.
Kaelen said flatly, “Bangkok… or…?”
The men yelled instantly. “Bangkok! We’ll go!”
Kaelen wasn’t done. “Apologize.”
He glanced at me. “To our lady.”
They scrambled, kowtowing towards me. “Forgive us, Miss Blackwood! We were blind! We hurt you! Please forgive us!”
I felt nothing but disgust. “Get out.”
Seraphina shivered. “Dad! Help!”
Atticus Hollis tried to shrink away.
Kaelen hauled him forward like a sack.
Grandfather’s eyes turned deadly. “You. Threw my daughter and granddaughter out?”
Atticus Hollis, the proud patriarch, crumpled. He fell to his knees. “Silas! I didn’t know Iris was your daughter! That woman seduced me! I loved Iris! I’d never cast her out!” He shoved his mistress forward.
I watched his act, remembering Mom’s despair when she found out.
Remembered him throwing us into the snow without coats.

Chapter 9
Remembered walking for hours to his mansion, begging for money for Mom’s medicine. He’d called me filth, thrown me out.
Remembered Mom crying his name in her fevered sleep.
Rage consumed me. I snatched Kaelen’s knife. Plunged it into Atticus Hollis’s chest. “You deserve to die!”
