Chapter 6
He yanked the blanket. The bloodstain made him stumble. “Is that…”
I calmly pulled the blanket back, hiding the horror.
My voice was detached. “Sign the divorce papers. Once I’m not Mrs. Voss, the curse will be broken, right?”
Ethan stared at my ravaged head, then at grandpa Voss.
He had someone bring the papers to the ward.
Signing, he muttered apologies. “Vivian, I’m so sorry… Once the baby…”
His phone rang, Skylar’s hysterical voice pierced the room.
“Ethan! The baby’s out of ICU, but something’s wrong! Get here now!”
I smiled at him. “Go. Your child needs you.”
He looked at me, his hand hovering as if to touch my face, but stopped. “I’ll be right back. Wait for me…”
I watched him stumble out of the ward, fingers touched my belly.
The heart monitor suddenly screamed. My blood pressure was plummeting.
A nurse rushed in, panicked.
I asked softly. “Could I have a hat?”
She was horrified.
Darkness crept in. Somewhere far off, Ethan might have called my name.
But this time, I had no answer.
Through the haze, I felt strong arms lift me.
A man’s urgent voice yelled. “Doctor, save her! Please, save her!”
As they wheeled me into surgery, I heard the doctor say, “…can’t save the baby…”
Tears slid and hit the cold metal.
This child was a miracle I hoped for.
My secret miracle. The child deemed impossible after the crash, arriving only to be ripped away.
Gone.
