Chapter 9
I kept dreaming, and I always woke up feeling lost.
It was raining outside.
Liam was sitting by my bed with a bowl of broth.
“Chicken, angelica, wolfberry,” he said, blowing on a spoon. “Rebuilds blood.”
I instinctively shrank back. “Liam, we used to be rivals. Why are you being so nice to me now?”
“You mean that time when you snatched the bid that I was about to get?” He put the bowl down. “I’m allergic to liquor, but I drank for you–then went straight to the ER.”
I stared at him, the memory slowly coming back.
After that night, our companies had reached a strange, unspoken truce.
“And that other big project,” he smile.“We ended up doing it together.”
“Yeah… and then you moved your headquarters to D.C.”
Liam smiled.
“Vivian,” he said softly, “it was never a war between us.”
I was stunned.
My phone buzzed. It was Lisa again, asking where I was.
I finally answered: [Alive. Don’t worry.]
”
I opened Instagram and the first thing I saw was Skylar’s newest post.
It was just one picture, but it was enough to make my tears fall.

In it, Ethan was holding the baby in the garden, and Skylar had her arm wrapped around his, smiling.
Liam suddenly took my phone away. “Don’t.”
He tried to wipe my tears away, but they just kept falling.
“Liam,” I sobbed, “when I was unconscious… I heard what you said to the doctor…”
“What?”
“The reason I had a miscarriage… was because I’d been exposed to musk ketone for a long time. It made the pregnancy unstable. And now… now I can never be a mom.”
“Vivian, it’s okay… I…”
“What I said before, about being a stepmom to your son… that was just an impulse,” I forced a smile. “I was just trying to spite Ethan. Don’t take it seriously.”
He clasped my hand. “I left NYC because I thought you were happy.”

Chapter 9
His voice was a low hum against the rain. “If I had known he would treat you like this…”
Little feet pounded the hall. “Daddy! My car is stuck under the sofa!”
A little boy peeked in and froze when he saw me.
My temples throbbed.
“Mommy?”
Liam scooped him up, his voice trembling. “Leo, this is…”
“I know!” Leo said excitedly, pointing to a photo on the nightstand. “She’s mommy and daddy looks at her every day!”

I finally noticed the photo. It was me, in a hospital gown, holding a newborn baby, smiling.
Liam handed Leo to the nanny and turned back to me, his eyes wet. “Vivian, are you okay?”
Ignoring the headache, I grabbed his hand. “What is going on?”
Liam finally told me everything. “After Leo was born, there was an accident. I couldn’t find you for a long time. When I finally did, you were already
Mrs. Voss. Vivian… Leo is our son.”
He leaned in and placed a soft kiss on my forehead.
It was as light as a feather, but it unlocked a flood of memories-
Liam’s arms around me as he taught me to ride a bike….
Sharing instant noodles after our first business failed…
The two lines on the pregnancy test, and him spinning me around in joy until I hit my head on the chandelier…
“Do you remember?” He whispered, his thumb wiping a tear from my eye. “It’s okay if you don’t… We have time.”
