Chapter86
Katheryn was on the phone. It was her boyfriend calling, “I’m at
the door, do you see me? Yeah, right here.””
The car stopped right in front of them. Katheryn turned around
and talked to Britney, “Britney, how about we give you a ride
home? It’s probably hard to get a car at this hour.”
“No need, you guys aren’t going that way. If you make a detour,
you won’t get home until after midnight. You’ve had a long day,
you should just go home and rest early.” Britney didn’t want to
trouble Katheryn.
“Alright then, take care.” Katheryn and Britney said goodbye
and drove off.
The rain wasn’t heavy.
The dampness, mixed with cold, kept creeping into my neck in
waves, icy and bone–chilling.
No one picked up the order on the ride–hailing app for a long
time.
So it turned out that in this huge Riverton, not a single car
would stop for her.
Chapter86
Britney waited for almost forty minutes before she got in the
car.
Back at the place, it was already past twelve.
What a tiring day.
Britney forced herself to take a hot shower, and when she came
out, she didn’t even have the strength to blow–dry her hair.
I lay down on the bed and almost instantly felt drowsy.
Luckily, the next two days were the weekend, and Britney got
to sleep in for once.
After I got up, I made some chicken soup and got ready to go to
the hospital to see Lila.
I just walked out the door and ran into the cleaning lady from
property management mumbling, “Who’s so inconsiderate,
smoking in the emergency exit?”
Lila recovered pretty well, and she seemed more energetic than
before.
After she drank the chicken soup, she talked with Britney and said she wanted to leave the hospital, saying the hospital was
too stuffy.
Chapter86
But Britney knew she was just afraid to spend money.
“It was no use talking it over with you and me, we had to listen.
to the doctor. The doctor said when to leave the hospital, so
that’s when we left.”
Lila suddenly went quiet. It was obvious she’d hit a wall with
the doctor and only came to try to talk her into it.
“If you felt bored, I could take you out for a walk to get some
fresh air, but the weather just wasn’t very good.”
The rain last night was on and off, and it got a lot colder.
Britney walked with Lila in the park next to the hospital. On the
way, when they ran into a couple taking wedding photos, Lila
stopped walking without thinking.
There was longing in her eyes as she looked at the young couple,
imagining what her daughter would look like when taking
wedding photos.
Britney felt a bit upset.
“Bree, when are you and Rod taking your wedding photos?” Lila
looked at her hopefully.
Britney’s throat felt dry, “He. was too busy, not sure for now.”
Chapter86
Lila sighed, “Rod was just too busy, but you guys had been
together for seven years. People online said the longer you
dated, the harder it was to get married. I always worried things
would change.”
Those words were like a needle, stabbing right into Britney’s
heart.
What made her sad wasn’t the guy’s change of heart.
She was just upset that she was already in her twenties but still
made her sick mom worry about her.
Britney was raised by Lila alone.
She got pregnant before marriage, and her parents, who cared a
lot about saving face, kicked her out. For years, they just
ignored her.
