Chapter 12
“What is wrong with that ungrateful brat?! I’m texting her and she won’t even reply! Does she still consider me her father?!”
Raya quickly handed Conrad a glass of water to comfort him. “Don’t get upset, Dad. She probably just doesn’t want to see me.”
She put on a hurt expression. “I don’t know what she said to Silas, and Aurelian’s being awful to me too all of a sudden.”
Raya showed Conrad and Millicent the red handprint on her face.
Seeing Raya hurt, Millicent pulled her into a protective embrace. “Mommy’s going to call your brother home right now, and Aurelian too. They’re going to bring Celia here to apologize to you.”
Silas had been drowning in regret during this time.
He’d asked himself over and over whether everything he’d done these past three years was wrong.
Every time he closed his eyes, he kept seeing the security footage from the police station–Celia jumping into the river without a moment’s hesitation.
When Millicent called, Silas reluctantly came home.
Before he even entered, he could hear laughter coming from the living room.
“Raya is so thoughtful. Mommy loves Raya the most.”
Silas stopped in his tracks. He’d heard those words countless times before and never thought anything was strange about them. But now, they sounded unbearably grating.
Like a voice kept repeating in his ear:
It’s not her! It shouldn’t be like this.
The moment Conrad saw Silas walk in looking completely defeated, he immediately started scolding:
“Where’s that ungrateful brat, Celia? Why didn’t she come back with you?”
“What’s gotten into you lately, treating Raya like this?”
Silas looked at the three people sitting intimately together on the couch, as if they were the real family unit.
His throat tightened. “Celia is dead.”
The entire living room fell into sudden silence, so quiet you could hear the ticking of the nearby clock.
“What… what did you say?”
After a long pause, Conrad finally spoke.
Silas repeated it, his voice so low it was barely audible, but in the silent Fairborne living room, it landed like a bomb.
“Celia is dead. The night of the party, she jumped into the river.”
Millicent immediately rushed to Silas’s side, her eyes vacant, her face filled with disbelief.
“You’re lying to Mommy, aren’t you?”
“How could you make up such a horrible lie with your sister!”

Chapter 12
Millicent cried while desperately seeking denial from Silas.
Looking at everything in front of him, Silas suddenly felt disgusted..
He placed the death certificate and cancer diagnosis on the table.
“This is the documentation Aurelian and I got from the police station, and… these are the personal effects Celia left behind before she jumped.”
With trembling fingers, Millicent picked up the two thin pieces of paper and clutched them to her chest, sobbing.
“My precious Celia!”
Raya sat on the couch watching Conrad and Millicent cry in grief, but there wasn’t a trace of sadness in her eyes. She even frowned slightly.
This scene didn’t escape Silas’s notice..
The moment their eyes met, Raya’s immediately filled with tears, putting on a show of grief.
She walked over to Millicent and gently wiped away her tears.
“Mom, I’m so sad about her too. I know you’re even more heartbroken, but if you make yourself sick from crying, she would be sad watching from heaven.”
Hearing this, Millicent forced herself to pull back from her grief.
“Thank goodness I have Raya, or I really wouldn’t know what to do.”
Millicent’s heart condition was acting up from the emotional shock, so Conrad took her back to their room to rest.
Only Raya and Silas remained in the living room.
Silas stared intently at Raya, making her fidget, though she tried to maintain her composure.
“Why are you looking at me like that?”
“Why aren’t you sad about Celia’s death?”
Tears immediately rolled down Raya’s cheeks. “How can you think that of me! I was just in shock for a moment. Even though Celia didn’t like me, I always hoped we could become a real family.”
Seeing her tears, which didn’t look fake, Silas rubbed his temples in frustration.
“Sorry, I’m just tired. Go to your room.”
Where he couldn’t see, Raya’s eyes were full of malice.
Why?
Even in death, she still couldn’t stay out of their lives.
