Chapter 22
Entering the office, Lysander sat behind his desk, adjusting his gold–rimmed glasses. “Miss Aurora, what seems to be the problem?” he asked.
“I’m pregnant. Write me a prescription for a pregnancy test,” Aurora replied.
Lysander choked on his water, spraying it out. “How old are you?” he asked, eyeing
“Eighteen, why?” Aurora responded.
Lysander glanced at Heath, not daring to ask further. “Aurora, give me your hand. I’ll take your pulse.”
Aurora was surprised that Lysander, so young, knew traditional medicine. She extended her hand, and he placed his fingers on her wrist.
After a moment, Lysander withdrew his hand. “You’re not pregnant.”
“I know,” she said.
“Then what are you doing here?” Lysander asked.
“I just need a prescription for a pregnancy test,” Aurora replied.
“Aurora, that’s against hospital policy,” Lysander said, looking uncomfortable.
“You don’t seem like someone who always follows the rules,” Aurora countered.
Lysander turned to Heath, as if to say, “Your call. Giving a fake pregnancy certificate to a young girl was no small matter.
Heath nodded, and Lysander began entering Aurora’s information into the computer.
Aurora leaned over, pointing at the screen.
screen. “Here, my blood type is A.
Lysander corrected the information and printed the document, handing it to Aurora. She happily tucked it into her bag, then noticed a pile of pilis. They were the same ones she’d found after her rebirth, the ones she’d consumed in large quantities without knowing what they were.
“Lysander, can you test these pills for me? Aurora asked.
Lysander nodded. “As long as they’re not illegal, I can test them.
Aurora placed several bottles on the table. “These. Tell me what they are.”
Lysander picked them up, noticing no labels. “Who’s been taking these?”
“I love, Aurora said.
“You dont know what you’ve been taking? Lysander asked.
“I wasn’t thinking clearly before. My stepmother gave them to me, and I took them,” Aurora shrugged.
Alright, I’ll take them to the lab,” Lysander said, standing and leaving the room.
Aurora knew the results would take time, so she stayed put, chatting with Little Fish. Heath sat on the office sofa, working on his laptop, silent.
Little Fish fell the atmosphere growing strange.
Aurora glanced at Heath, who ignored her. She glanced again, still ignored.
What was wrong with this man?
Just days ago, he’d been involved in every aspect of her life, even her college major. Now he acted like he didn’t know her?
Aurora grew annoyed. Who didn’t have a temper?
Chapter 22
He didn’t know her? Fine. He’d only saved her once. What was the big deal?
She stood up, ready to leave with Little Fish, when Heath suddenly answered a phone call. “I know. Send the video over. I’ll handle it myself.”
A voice from the computer said, “Mr. Whitmore, I’ve long admired your reputation.
Aurora froze. Mr. Whitmore? Whitmore Corporation?
quietly sat back down, listening intently
“Mr. Whitmore, if you want to cooperate, you’ll need to show some sincerity, Heath said.
Autora couldn’t tell what they were discussing, but suddenly a female voice came through the video. “Daddy, I’m back! Are you busy?”
Mr. Whitmore quickly apologized, saying, “My daughter doesn’t know any better, Mr. Fairbank. Please excuse her.” Then, in a doting tone, “Isabella, Daddy’s busy. Wait a moment.”
Aurora’s body went rigid. It was Isabella Whitmore!
Even through the video, that brief sentence was unmistakable. It was the voice she’d never forget, even in her dreams.
That woman had become her deepest nightmare. Countless times, she’d relived the scene in her dreams, seeing Isabella’s mocking, sneering face.
Seeing Mike fall with lifeless eyes.
Watching Isabella ruthlessly cut her tendons.
The bullet that had pierced her heart seemed to have followed her soul into Aurora’s body. Hearing Isabella’s voice, her heart spasmed in pain.
