Chapter 5
I shot Nickler a glare.
Yes, that’s right.
Nickler was my first love.
My actual, legitimate first love.
Eiden’s gaze suddenly snapped to Nickler.
His usually gentle expression tightened, like a bowstring pulled taut.
He didn’t say a word. He just stared at Nickler’s hand resting on my shoulder.
I could feel that Eiden’s breathing had slowed, just slightly.
It was rare, almost unheard of.
He never reacted so visibly, especially not with me.
Meanwhile, Nickler, smiling like always, leaned closer.
“Bexley, we’ve got a department dinner later. Wanna come? I can introduce my ‘ex–girlfriend‘ to
everyone properly.”
“I’m not your ex–girlfriend.”
I shoved his hand away in disgust.
God, he didn’t use to be this shameless.
Nickler and I had a short–lived first love that fizzled out without much drama.
Then he suddenly transferred schools and left me a message: Wait for me.
After that, he vanished without a trace.
Until two weeks ago, he just dropped out of the sky and landed as the director of my department.
That’s when I found out the jerk had only just returned to the country.
Eiden finally spoke, his voice noticeably lower than usual.

“Bexley and I already have plans tonight. She won’t be going to that dinner.”
I frowned and instinctively corrected him. “We don’t have plans.”
At that, Nickler raised an eyebrow.
“So, you’re the ex, huh? I’m Bexley’s boss now. And a fun fact, I was her first love.”
He made sure to emphasize the words first love.
“But don’t worry. I never step in the same river twice, unless the river flows back to me on its own.”
God, what an infuriating thing to say.
This guy hadn’t changed a bit.
“You’re disgusting. Who’d ever be your flowing river?”
“Who knows? It could happen.”

While I was trading barbs with Nickler, I caught a glimpse of Eiden from the corner of my eye. His Adam’s apple bobbed.

His eyes were locked on my face, filled with something turbulent and unreadable.
Like a calm lake suddenly disturbed by a stone, sending ripples everywhere.
“Bexley…”
Eiden suddenly called my name.
He casually stepped between me and Nickler.
“You’re not going to that dinner. It’s too late.”
It was the first time he’d spoken to me like this.
There was a hint of something subtle, but definitely there.
Maybe a bit of… urgency? And uncertainty?
Nickler let out a mocking chuckle.

“Mr. Ex, Bexley is one of my most capable employees. She has every reason to be at this dinner.”
“Don’t be so unreasonable. You’re interfering with her work.”
I rolled my eyes again.
He kept saying “Mr. Ex” like he wasn’t one himself.
“We never broke up!” Eiden snapped.
His sudden outburst was completely out of character.
I looked at him, confused.
Last time, when I said we should break up, all he did was walk away in silence.
Nickler, the bastard, was
clearly enjoying this.
He pulled out his phone and held up a photo for Eiden to see.
“Aw, Bexley fell asleep on her desk last night working late. I even covered her with my jacket.”
“Look! She’s wearing my jacket and sleeping like a baby. Just like back in high school.”
In the picture, my hair was a mess and my cheeks were flushed from sleep.
Nickler pointed to a faint brown scar on my wrist.
That tiny mark was left in high school, when I got scratched by a barbed wire fence on one of our
dates.
“The scar’s still there. She got that while we were out together…”
At that, Eiden’s fingers curled into fists. His breathing quickened.
“Nickler, that’s enough.”
I couldn’t stay silent anymore.
My voice came out colder than I expected.
