Chapter 6
Nickler shrugged and waved dismissively.
“Alright, alright, I’ll stop. I’ll go grab the car. Wait for me. We’ll head to the dinner together.”
As he walked past Eiden, he gave his shoulder a pat.
“Mr. Riley, don’t be too possessive of your ex.‘
Eiden didn’t react.
Not until Nickler had walked off did he turn to face me.
The evening sunlight cast a golden glow across his face, like a halo.
He hesitated, then asked, “Were you and him… really that close in high school?”
I nodded.
Eiden went quiet.
I thought he was going to shut down again like always.
But then he said something unexpected.
“Bexley… the day you told me you wanted to break up, I looked into your past.”
“I read about Nickler. Found out he was your first love.”
I froze.
He looked into me?
The man who always preached about respecting privacy, the one who never even touched my phone, had actually looked me up?
The night breeze tousled the strands of hair across his forehead.
He looked at me, and for the first time, I could clearly read the emotion in his eyes.
It wasn’t the usual calm concern.
It was more like a lost child, panicked and confused… and even a little hurt.

“Have you… never gotten over him?” he asked, voice barely above a whisper.
“I always had this feeling that the six months you were with him… that was when you were truly
happy.”
“But when you were with me, you never really looked happy. You were always tense. Bexley, do you
still love him?”
I stared into the confusion clouding his eyes, then suddenly smiled.
That night, I stayed at Penney’s place.
I told her about the entire emotional rollercoaster.
She slammed her hand on the table.
“I get it now! Eiden is guarding his bowl like a dog.”
“He used to act all aloof and enlightened like he had you wrapped around his finger. But now that
he’s got real competition, it’s a whole different story.”
Penney burst into wicked laughter.
“Eiden, oh Eiden… look at you now.”
I rubbed my forehead.
After her laugh faded, she asked me seriously:
“If he really changed… would you take him back?”
“No.”
I wouldn’t get back together with him.
And Eiden wasn’t going to change.
Then, out of nowhere, our company started a sudden collaboration with Eiden’s.
In the conference room, he sat at the head of the table in a sharp black suit.
His face was calm and composed, but under the table, I saw his fingers curling slightly.

That was his tell.
A little habit he had when he was nervous.
In the past four years, I’d only seen it three times.
The first was when he met my parents for the first time.
The second, when a project of his nearly tanked the company.
And the third time was now.
Nickler, seated next to me, nudged my arm with his pen.
“Look at him. Your ex is about to crash.”
I ignored him and focused on reviewing the project brief.
Eiden was speaking.
But I noticed that his eyes kept drifting in my direction.
When he got to the part about “user experience,” he suddenly paused and added,
“For example… we could incorporate Bexley’s preferences by adding star elements to the loading
page.
The room went silent.
Nickler snorted.
“Mr. Riley seems to know our Bexley’s tastes quite well.”
“Understanding your liaison’s preferences is part of my job,” Eiden replied stiffly, giving me a quick glance.
After the meeting, Eiden stopped me in the hallway.
“Bexley, I still have some questions about the data model. Can we talk in private?”
Nickler stepped in between us.
“Bexley and I have a client meeting this afternoon. Mr. Riley, if you have any questions, you can send an email.”

“Or speak with someone else on our team instead.”
As he said it, he casually wrapped his arm around my shoulders and led me away.
