Chapter 7
As we reached the conference room doors, Nickler suddenly stopped in his tracks.
“Oh, by the way, Mr. Riley, Bexley’s favorite thing isn’t actually the stars. Someone like her, such a scatterbrain, how could she truly appreciate stars?”
“She used to love fireflies. Her dad used to take her out to the countryside to catch them. After he passed, that’s when she started liking stars instead.”
Eiden abruptly looked up at me.
His eyes were filled with surprise.
Suddenly, something clicked for him.
“You… told me that once, didn’t you?”
I didn’t respond.
It wasn’t until that moment that Eiden remembered what I’d told him in the past.
That night, I received an email from Eiden.
It wasn’t about work. Just a single fragmented line: “I’m sorry!”
Attached were dozens of photos of different kinds of fireflies.
“Someday, I’ll take you firefly–catching too.”
That was just like him.
Like some Al programmed to simulate “being kind to me,” awkwardly mimicking what it thought
that meant.
Outside the window, the city lights shimmered like a river of stars.
Penney had been right. He was being possessive.
Like a wolf guarding its food. Panic in its eyes at the mere thought of losing it.
The next day after work, Eiden wasn’t waiting for me downstairs.
Nickler tapped on my desk.

“Spacing out again? What now? Having second thoughts?”
“Don’t be ridiculous. Of course not.”
I snorted coldly.
Nickler looked pleased.
Just as we were talking, someone called out to me.
“Miss Bexley, there’s a lady downstairs looking for you. Her last name’s Flynn.”
Flynn?
Could it be Winnie?
Sure enough, when I got to the lobby, it was Winnie.
She sat on the couch in the reception area, wearing a cream–colored dress. Her demeanor was soft and graceful.
When she saw me walk in, she stood up with a gentle smile.
“Miss Russell, hello.”
“Is there something you need?”
A faint sense of unease crept into my
heart.
Winnie got straight to the point.
“I hope you’ll give me your blessing…to me and Eiden.”
My mind went blank for a second.
Blessing?
Winnie continued.
“I know it’s not right of me to ask this. But Miss Russell… feelings can’t be forced.”
“You and Eiden were together for four years. You must’ve known that he never really loved you.”
Her voice was sincere, maybe even a little pleading.

She bowed deeply, and tears began to fall.
“Could you… let Eiden go?”
By now, her words had drawn attention from people around us.
I clenched my fists and let out a dry laugh.
“What happens with Eiden has nothing to do with me.”
“Besides, he’s a free man. He has the right to make his own choices. It’s not about me ‘letting‘
anyone go.”
As I spoke, I noticed Winnie’s expression suddenly stiffen.
Her eyes were locked on something behind me.
A chill ran through me.

And sure enough, in the next second, Eiden’s voice came, cold as ice.
“What’s going on here?”
He walked over in a few quick strides, stopping at my side, his eyes fixed on Winnie.
I had never seen that kind of harshness in his gaze. It was sharp and displeased.
Winnie was clearly shocked by his reaction.
Tears streamed down her face, and her expression became even more pitiful.
“Eiden, don’t get the wrong idea. I just wanted to talk to Miss Russell…‘
“What’s there to talk about?”
Eiden cut her off, irritation dripping from his voice.
Winnie faltered. More tears fell.
“I–I just couldn’t stand seeing you hurt over her…”
“Who I’m hurting over is none of your business.”
His tone stayed ice–cold.

“Now please, leave.”
Winnie stared at him in disbelief, like she was seeing him clearly for the first time.
Then she turned her gaze to me, unwillingness flashing in her eyes.
The whole scene left me feeling dazed.
