Chapter 8
After Winnie left, Eiden finally turned to me.
The coldness on his face had faded, replaced by a sense of caution and unease.
“Bexley, no matter what she said, don’t believe a word of it.”
“She just divorced her ex–husband. She came back to me hoping I’d take care of her and the kid.”
“I felt sorry for her, so I tried to comfort her… but I never thought she’d misunderstand…”
He spoke quickly, more rushed than usual.
I shook my head and stepped back.
“Eiden, you don’t owe me an explanation. Your life stopped having anything to do with me a long time ago.”
The light in his eyes dimmed instantly.
“How could it not matter? We were… we almost got married.”
“We broke up!” I repeated.
“We’re not breaking up!” he raised his voice, drawing curious glances from people nearby.
I was about to reply when Nickler suddenly walked over.
He casually slung an arm over my shoulder, grinning at Eiden with mockery.
“Mr. Riley, are you trying to force your way back in?”
“This is between me and Bexley. It’s none of your business.”
Eiden’s
gaze sharpened like a blade, fixating on Nickler’s arm.
Nickler only grinned wider.
“How is it none of my business? Bexley’s my colleague now and my first love, too.”
“You-!”
Eiden was so angry that he panted heavily, his fury barely contained. When he looked at me, his eyes were filled with accusation and hurt.

As if saying, “He’s clearly doing this to get between us.”
Stuck in the middle, all I felt was a splitting headache.
I slapped Nickler’s hand away. “Stop stirring the pot.”
Then I turned to Eiden, impatience creeping into my voice.
“You need to go. I’ve got work to do.”
Without waiting for his reply, I walked toward the elevator, wanting to end it then and there.
As the doors closed, I saw Eiden still standing in place.
His eyes followed me the whole time, filled with pain.
And beside him, Nickler stood with hands in his pockets, looking irritatingly smug.

I thought after all that, Eiden would finally back off.
But I was wrong. His efforts only intensified.
He no longer waited for me outside the office every day.
But signs of him were everywhere in my life.

My mom called to say Eiden had visited again, chatting with her, bringing a brand–new massage
machine.
He had completely won her over. On the phone, she gushed: “He’s such a good man. You really ought to treasure him.”
On Instagram, he still liked and commented on my posts.
But it wasn’t the same old generic concern.
He’d started following the bands I liked, sending me their latest songs.
He sent me photos of fireflies.
And sometimes, he’d even awkwardly tell me corny jokes…
That evening, it started pouring as I got off work.
I waited for a car outside the building.

Suddenly, an umbrella appeared over my
I thought it was Nickler.
head.
But when I turned around, I found that it was Eiden.
He was holding my jacket. One I’d left at his place.
“Put this on. You’ll catch a cold.”
He draped it over my shoulders, his voice full of quiet concern.
I sighed. “Thanks.”
He smiled, eyes crinkling.
“You don’t have to thank me. We’re way past that.‘
Since I couldn’t get a car, I ended up riding in his.
Just after getting in, Nickler called.
“You still waiting for a ride? I’m on my way to pick you up.”
“No need. I’m already in a car.”
He paused, clearly disappointed.
Then cautiously asked:
“Is it Eiden?”
“Yeah.”
