“Why you being so petty? We’re all family–with your good situation, what’s wrong with raising one more kid?”
I should never have held out hope for them. I shook off her hand: “Sorry, can’t help. Either call the cops or whatever–I’m done with this.”
With the DNA results in hand, I told the police straight up: “For what happened today. I want her to apologize publicly and pay damages for emotional distress.”
She ruined my son’s celebration party–I wasn’t gonna let her off. Then Marcus called our lawyer to handle it while we rushed back to the kids‘ party.
The Harvard professor also chilled out after seeing the DNA proof. This was good–at least my son’s future wouldn’t be screwed.
After the banquet ended, our family went back to the restaurant here.
The next day, Mom and Dad called me crying: “Mia, please come! Let’s go to the orphanage together, okay? Please, for Mom’s sake, come help your sister. She’s getting beaten to death!”
I glanced at Marcus. He nodded at me. So I agreed and we went to the orphanage together.
When we met up? Sophia’s face was covered in bruises–beaten black and blue. When she saw me, a flash of venom crossed her eyes.
I smiled coldly. This was all Sophia’s own doing–nothing to do with me.
But when we got to the orphanage? Staff told us the kid had run away long ago.
“Run away? What you mean?”
Sophia looked shook.
“Petty theft, stealing multiple times. After finishing vocational school he dropped out. Then started dating. You’re looking for him? Try the hot dog stand on Snack Street–he’s there.”
When we rushed to Snack Street to ask around, we saw him sitting behind a small stall playing games.
In front of him was a woman with a huge pregnant belly making hot dog.
At the woman’s feet was a three–year–old kid.
I was stunned.
He was only eighteen himself but already had a three–year–old kid–was this even legit?
Looking at the woman’s age, she had to be like thirty.

He didn’t look up: “Yeah, what’s it to you?”
The woman looked suspicious at Sophia: “Who are you?”
“Who are YOU?”
“I’m his woman!”
Sophia got pissed: “Billy is only eighteen but you’re over thirty, aren’t you!”

The woman banged her pan loud: “So what? See this belly? That’s his baby inside!”
“And this kid?”
“The one on the ground is from my ex–husband!”
Sophia nearly fainted: “You were even divorced before, you old hag!”
Hearing this, the woman smacked Sophia in the face with her ladle: “Damn it! Calling me an old hag–I think you’re the old one!”
“Getting beaten black and blue and you still got the nerve to come mock me!”
“Billy Martinez, are you dead or what! Someone’s calling your wife an old hag–beat her up!”
Billy got up and without a word slapped Sophia. Stunned her. Then Nathan charged out: “What the hell you doing, kid!”
Seeing the big gold chain, Billy immediately cowered and hid behind the woman.
“A kid like you is supposed to be my son? That’s gotta be wrong!”
I compared the photo from the orphanage with Billy.
Definitely him.
“No mistake. Billy Martinez, these are your biological parents.”
