Chapter 299
Mrs. Garnett looked at James with displeasure. “Is something wrong?”
He’d been distracted since that call – must be something serious.
Charlotte watched him too. He’d mentioned Sarah’s name, which now triggered an instant reaction in her.
“Sarah’s missing.” James said
Remembering Melvin’s words, he instinctively looked at Charlotte “Do you know where she is?”
“James! What are you implying? How would I know where she is?” Charlotte’s face hardened
James smiled apologetically. “After what Lucy did, I’m worried she might try something similar.”
Charlotte glared at him, but catching her mother’s eye, she calmed herself. “James, I’m upset because you immediately suspected me. You know me better than that. I’ve been with you all day, never left your side. Besides, everyone knows the Sanders family disapproves of Zachary. Maybe Sarah just went to see him.”
Despite her explanation, James felt something wasn’t right. If Sarah were with Zachary, Melvin wouldn’t have called him. He decided to call Lucy.
“Where are you?”
Music blared in the background. “At home.”
“Don’t lie. Where are you really?”
“At a bar.”
“Have you s
seen Sarah?” James asked directly.
Lucy paused before answering, “No, why would I see that witch? Isn’t she back with her family? Don’t mention her to me.”
Before James could respond, someone called Lucy to drink more “Got to go,” she hung up quickly.
James stared at his phone. Not Lucy either.
An awkward silence filled the room. Charlotte tugged at James’s sleeve. “James, this is the Sanders‘ family matter. It’s not our concern. Remember why we’re here? Stop getting involved in their affairs.”
James apologized again,
but Mrs. and Mr. Gamett’s words barely registered. His mind stayed on Sarah.
With the Sanders‘ resources in East Coast, finding someone should be easy. Why would Melvin ask him? He must be completely lost.
Charlotte was near breaking point. Her mother had been talking to James, but he was lost in his own world.
Melvin had declared all ties with the Chancers severed at the press conference. She’d planned to forget about Sarah and focus on her marriage.
Yet one phone call about Sarah had captured James’s complete attention. He’d even accused her and his sister!
James‘ Stop thinking about Sarah!” she shouted
Her parents looked at her sympathetically while James jumped to his feet. “I’m sorry, Charlotte. Sorry Mom, Dad Something’s come up – Il apologize properly another time.”
