Chapter 2 Eloping
“Clare, I know running off with me was hard on you. But I swear, I’ll treat you right from now on.”
His soft voice echoed in her ears. Clarissa’s eyes flew open.
And there he was. Gregory. His eyes warm and fake.
“Gregory!”
Memories of her death slammed into her. Her whole body shook.

“Nightmare?” Gregory gently touched her forehead. “We’re already at sea. Jonathan can’t catch us now. And your folks? Don’t worry. Selina will take care of them.”
Clarissa slapped his hand away without thinking. She turned stiffly and stared out at the waves.
The sea stretched wide, crashing hard against the rocks.

She was alive again–back on the boat. Back to when she first ran off with Gregory.
Last time, she broke her engagement with Jonathan and ran away. The Jeffersons cut ties with the Chandlers. Jonathan left. Her family lost everything. George got desperate and fell into Selina’s trap before ending up in prison.
“Clare, what’s going on?” Gregory frowned, rubbing his wrist where she had slapped his hand.
Clarissa looked up at him. Her eyes were bloodshot and burning with rage.
He looked confused, but the boat was about to leave. He didn’t want to waste time. “Come on. Let’s go,” he said, reaching for her hand.
The moment he reached for her, she yanked her arm away.
“Clare, what the hell? You don’t want to come with me?” There was a flicker of rage simmering in his eyes.
“As if!” She let out a cold laugh. “You’re not worth it.”
Then, she raised her hand and slapped him. Hard.
“Clarissa!”
Gregory’s voice cracked with disbelief. His face stung where her slap had landed, and for once, all that fake warmth in his tone was gone. J
“Don’t call me that. It makes me sick.” Clarissa’s stomach churned. Her voice was sharp, her disgust real.
“Sick? So now you’re changing your mind?” Gregory’s words came fast, his temper flaring. “Still hung up on Jonathan, huh? Can’t let go of the Jefferson name? So, that’s what this is. You’re just a shallow, greedy woman who only wants money and power!”
The mention of Jonathan made her heart twist, but Gregory’s insult snapped something in her. “Gregory, you’re not even close to Jonathan’s level. He’s the heir of the Jeffersons. You? You’re just a broke lowlife.”
She didn’t want to waste another breath on him. She had run away with him, but now she knew better. The Chandlers and Jeffersons were probably already searching. She had to go back. Now.
She turned to leave.
The boat was almost ready. Gregory watched her walk away like she didn’t matter. Rage sparked in his eyes. He wasn’t about to let her go.
He grabbed her wrist and yanked her toward the boat.
“Let go of me!”

Clarissa fought hard, but her body was still too weak. No matter how much she struggled, she couldn’t break free.
He was pulling her up the dock when they were interrupted by screeching tires.
A long line of black cars rolled in, perfectly timed.
Their headlights sliced through the dark, so blinding she had to turn her face.

Through the glare, she saw the man in the front car. His expression was hard to read, but his presence was unmistakable.
Her heart jumped–it was Jonathan.
