Clarissa’s throat tightened. “I didn’t see things clearly before,” she said softly. “You have every right to be mad. I deserve it, But please, don’t leave me.” She lowered her voice. “You still care. I know you do. Yesterday, when Mr. Lawson pressured you, you didn’t tell him where you were. You were protecting me.”
Jonathan’s jaw tightened. “My fiancée running off is not something I want public. I kept quiet for myself, not for you. I-”
Before he could finish, she kissed him.
She climbed into his lap, straddling him, and pressed her mouth against his. She didn’t know what she was doing. It was clumsy, messy, and full of heat.
They both gasped for air when she pulled away.
Jonathan stared at her in shock. “Clarissa, you-”
She kissed him again. Harder. Her hands held his face. “I’m not listening! If you say we’re done. I’ll shut you up myself!”
And she did. Every time he opened his mouth, she kissed him.
She didn’t let him speak.
By the time she stopped, his lips were red and swollen.
Jonathan was breathing hard. One corner of his lip had split. “Clarissa—”
She leaned forward again, but this time he covered her mouth with his hand. He held it tight against her lips.
Clarissa stared at him, eyes wide, unable to speak.
He looked at her, tired, lost, and completely worn out. “What are you trying to do to me?”
“I don’t want to break off the engagement.” Clarissa’s mouth was still covered by his hand. Only her eyes showed. She blinked and whispered against his palm. “Jonny, don’t end things, okay?”
Jonny.
She almost never used that name. Hearing it now made Jonathan’s chest tighten.
He had no idea why she suddenly wanted to make peace. But like she said, he still loved her. No matter how much he tried, he had never been able to push her away.
And right now, he was craving that small piece of warmth.
He let out a long breath. “Get off me first.”
“Then, promise not to call off the engagement,” Clarissa said. She wasn’t letting go.
“I’ll think about it,” Jonathan agreed, voice low. “Now, get off.”
She knew he wouldn’t budge any further, so she didn’t fight it. She got off him without saying a word.
Her clothes were a mess after all that kissing.
Jonathan turned his head away. His voice was sharp. “Go fix yourself up in the lounge. You look like hell.”
There was a lounge connected to his office, and it came with a private bathroom. Clarissa glanced down at her rumpled clothes and her slightly swollen lips. She looked like she’d been wrecked.
And since he seemed halfway convinced already, she behaved for once and walked into the lounge.

The door shut behind her. Jonathan finally let go of the tight knot in his chest. He touched his lips with his thumb. He could still smell her. That soft sweetness lingered. The whole thing felt like a dream.
Then, the noise snapped him out of it.
A phone buzzed on the table–Clarissa’s.
Jonathan normally wouldn’t touch someone else’s phone.
He only picked it up to pass it back to her. His thumb slipped and tapped the answer button by mistake.
A woman’s voice came through the speaker.
“Clare, how did it go with Mr. Jefferson? Did he agree to let Gregory go? If he didn’t, just keep working him. Tell him you won’t break off the engagement if he gives in I can’t believe you’re sweet talking that guy you hate the most just for Gregory That’s rough.”
