Chapter 23 The Gift from Clarissa

After leaving the hospital, Clarissa carried her many gift bags straight to Jefferson Group to see Jonathan. However, thanks to Jonathan’s previous instructions, the receptionist didn’t dare let her in, no matter what she said.
“You’re saying Jonathan has banned me from entering Jefferson Tower again?” Clarissa asked quietly, her eyes fixed on the receptionist.
The receptionist nodded with great reluctance. The CEO said it himself… This isn’t our call… Please don’t blame us…
“Alright then. Give this to Jonathan for me. I’m leaving.” Clarissa didn’t force her way in. She simply handed over the gifts and turned to leave.
When it came to pursuing a man, being overly clingy never worked. She knew when to take a step back and when to play hard to get–otherwise, she’d never win him over.
The receptionist hadn’t expected her to give up so easily and let out a huge sigh of relief. She’d been terrified Clarissa would barge in again. Whatever spat the CEO and his sweetheart were having, it shouldn’t be the employees‘ problem!
Meanwhile, inside the CEO’s office at Jefferson Group, Jonathan sat across from George.
“Mr. Jefferson,” George said calmly, “my little sister doesn’t like you. There’s no point in pushing this any further. I’m asking you to let her go.”
As he spoke, he placed a folder on the desk in front of Jonathan. “Regarding Clare and Gregory, it’s true that we owe your family an apology. This is our token of goodwill.”
Jonathan lowered his gaze to the so–called apology gift. Well, his heart genuinely ached for his baby sister. So much so that he’s handing over a contract that’s worth billions annually. Is the Chandlers‘ desperation to cut ties Clarissa’s idea?
George noticed his silence and frowned slightly, the sharp lines of his face tensing. Unlike Jonathan’s cool, quiet demeanor, George radiated a powerful, oppressive presence–domineering and cold, the kind of man who wasn’t easy to approach.
“If you really like Clare, then let her go,” George advised coldly. “If you keep pushing her, she’ll break.”
She’d nearly run away again just to avoid marrying Jonathan. A few days ago, she’d even attempted suicide. They were truly afraid she’d do something reckless. There was no way they could allow the marriage to go forward.
“She asked you to come?” Jonathan finally looked up, his hoarse voice quiet.
“You know as well as I do–she’s always hated you.” George’s tone turned even frostier.
Jonathan’s lips curled into a bitter smirk. Yeah, that’s no news.
“She’s already returned the emerald pendant. From this point on, there’s nothing between us.” His voice was cold as ice. The office lighting cast a deep shadow across his forehead, adding to the bleakness in his expression.
George hadn’t known the engagement pendant had already been returned. It seemed Clare’s runaway stunt this time had finally shattered Jonathan’s hopes. Maybe that was for the best. The two of them were never meant to be together.
“Take the contract back,” Jonathan said, pushing the folder across the desk.
George frowned. “It’s an apology gift. You should accept it.”
Jonathan’s voice was low and steady. “There was never a trade between me and Clarissa.”
George’s frown deepened. It was clear Jonathan hadn’t truly moved on. “Jonathan, you can’t force feelings, Clare never loved you.”
It was time he gave up.
“Mr. Jefferson.”

Chapter 23 The Gift from Clarissa
Just as George finished speaking, a knock came at the door, and Jonathan’s secretary stepped inside.
Jonathan quickly pushed down the storm rising in his chest and turned to them. “What is it?”
“Miss Chandler came by earlier. She left these gifts… Said they were for you.”
His eyes widened, and his gaze snapped straight to the bag in the secretary’s hands.
