Chapter 25 Why Didn’t You Give It to Me Yourself?
“Clare. I just don’t want you to regret it later,” Selina said quickly. “Why did you kick Gregory out of the hospital?”

“What’s the point of keeping a man who doesn’t love me?” Clarissa replied coldly. “His whole world revolves around his precious little sister.”
Her tone was indifferent, but the words sounded like something a girlfriend would say during a lovers‘ spat. Selind immediately caught on–it was all because of Chloe!
What worried her most wasn’t that Clarissa might hate Gregory. As long as there was still a shred of affection left, Selina wasn’t afraid. She just didn’t want Clarissa to abandon him and go running into Jonathan’s arms.
“Chloe’s always been a reckless brat–you know that,” Selina said gently. “You really don’t need to let her get between you and Gregory. The two of you-”
“Why do you keep speaking up for them?” Clarissa’s eyes were sharp and cold. “Whose side are you on, anyway? Don’t bring him up to me again.”
Without waiting for a response. Clarissa turned and stormed upstairs like she was throwing a tantrum.
Selina let out a quiet sigh of relief. If this was just Clarissa being stubborn and waiting for Gregory to coax her, then it was still salvageable.
“Mr. George!”
The servants greeted him respectfully as he walked in, dressed in a sharp suit and radiating authority.
“George!” Selina’s eyes lit up at the sight of him, and she rushed forward, hugging him enthusiastically around the waist. “It’s been forever since you came home!”
George, not one for physical contact, subtly stepped back, his angular face cold and rigid like carved stone.
“What’s going on?” he asked, referring to the pile of gifts in the living room.
Selina smiled. “Everyone’s been working so hard lately, and with the new year coming up, it’d be nice to surprise them.”
The way she said it made it sound like the gifts were from her, and George didn’t question it. It never occurred to him that Clarissa might’ve been the one who bought them. He figured she’d done well enough just not to throw a tantrum–no way she was going around buying thoughtful gifts for people.
“Where’s Clare?”
He wanted to talk to her about the situation with Jonathan. If she didn’t like the guy, fine–but she shouldn’t be toying with him or sending gifts to humiliate him. The Jeffersons weren’t a family she could afford to provoke. If Jonathan hadn’t liked. her enough to keep their elopement under wraps, she’d already have been done for.
“George, maybe don’t go to her right now,” Selina advised hesitantly. “She’s not in a great mood.”
Not in a good mood? George frowned. The truth was, none of the three brothers had a particularly close relationship with Clarissa. He himself had always been terrible at expressing emotions, especially with younger girls. If she was upset, maybe it was better to wait.
“This is for you and Clare. Give hers to her for me, would you? I’ve got an auction tonight and have to head out.”
George always brought back gifts for both Clarissa and Selina whenever he visited. But he never had the courage to give Clarissa hers directly, so he handed both to Selina instead.
Selina took them with a sweet smile, the same one she always wore. She just waited for George to leave–then, like she always did, she’d toss Clarissa’s gift in the trash and show off hers in front of her later.
Then, just as George turned to leave…
“George, if you brought me a gift, why didn’t you give it to me yourself?”

A voice suddenly rang out behind them. “Do you really hate seeing me that much?”
Selina’s expression shifted instantly. She spun around to see Clarissa leaning lazily against the second–floor railing.
