Chapter 3
I dragged my exhausted body back to my parents‘ home.
The moment my mom saw me, she pulled me into her arms.
“Sweetheart, what happened to your face?” she asked, her voice trembling with worry.
“Where’s Ethan? Didn’t he come back with you?”
I buried my face in her shoulder, soaking it with tears.
“Did you two fight? What happened?”
Her voice was gentle, soothing–but it only made my emotions crash down harder.
“Mom… that child…”
I told my parents everything- every single detail. They were stunned into silence.
“I can’t believe Ethan turned out
to be that kind of man,” my mother said, seething. “How could he even live with himself?”
“Divorce him,” my father growled. “We don’t w anything.”

The moment Ethan noticed me, he jumped to his feet.
He glanced at the wound on my face, pain flashing in his eyes.
“Baby, I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt you yesterday.
“She’s the most cherished one in our family. You know that. I couldn’t bear to see her get hurt.”
He grabbed my hand and placed it against his own face.
“I know I hurt you. If punishing me makes you feel better, I won’t stop you.”
I yanked my hand away, my voice sharp and cold.
“I came for the divorce papers.”
Ethan’s expression collapsed.
“What’s going on with you? What happened, Daisy? Please, just talk to me.”
In just two days, it felt like I had used up every ounce of strength Thad.
“I just want a divorce. I’m tired. I don’t love you anymore.”
But Ethan couldn’t hear me. He shook his head repeatedly.
“That’s not true. It’s not. Tell me what I did wrong, and I’ll fix it.”
“You’re lying–you don’t mean it. I know you still love me. If you don’t want the child, then we won’t raise her. No kids, that’s fine. I only want you.”

He wrapped his arms around me tightly, as if trying to fuse our bodies together.
“Ethan! Are you deaf? I have only one request–divorce.”
I stared him down, each word slow and deliberate.
“Or should I tell everyone what you’ve really been up to?”
Ethan tried to stay calm, but I caught the flicker of panic that flashed across his face.
Then Julia cut in.
“Let her go, Ethan. She’s an ungrateful brat who never appreciated anything you did. Her heart’s colder than stone.”
“There are plenty of women out there–why’d you waste your time on someone like her in the first place?”
Ethan swung around and slapped her.
Julia cupped her cheek in disbelief.
“Apologize to her,” Ethan ordered, voice trembling.
Julia turned her head away, eyes brimming with tears, lips clamped shut.

On the elevator ride down, I could feel people whispering behind me. The sound of fingers typing on phones, eyes flicking my way.
I snatched a phone out of someone’s hand.
“What are you all saying about me?”
The company group chat was blowing up–99+
messages flooding in.
[Heard the kid is actually the CEO’s biological daughter. He admitted it himself.]
[Mrs. Sinclair’s being ridiculous. Who gets upset over a birthmark that small?]
{That little girl’s adorable. So sweet. I’d adopt her myself. Who wouldn’t want her?]
[Let’s be real–she’s just mad she can’t have her own. Now she’s blaming the child. Poor Mr. Sinclair, stuck with a wife like that. That woman’s a nightmare. Total control freak.]
Then Julia chimed in:
[Keep gossiping and you’re fired.]
The group chat fell completely silent.
I let out a low, bitter laugh.
Julia sure wielded a lot of power these days.
All thanks to Ethan–she’d worked her way up to become the CEO’s personal assistant.
