Chapter 5
Haley stormed over to Thomas and pointed at me while yelling, “Mr. Siegel, look at this wretched woman! It’s bad enough she came here to ruin my wedding, but she’s pretending to be your wife. How despicable and shameless can she be?”
Thomas was here today as a guest of Joel, who had invited him to the wedding. Joel might be just a driver, but he had served Thomas for over a decade.
Thomas looked in the direction of Haley’s finger to check out the woman who was accused of impersonating his wife.
The moment his eyes landed on me, his expression froze.
He couldn’t believe the bloodied and battered figure before him was the same poised, elegant woman he knew as his wife.
“Is she that woman you just called shameless?”
His voice trembled. That was a clear sign that he had recognized me.
Truthfully, I didn’t want Thomas to see me in such a miserable state, which is why I had kept my head down and avoided his gaze.
But I underestimated the depth of his feelings for me. Despite my disheveled appearance, he recognized me in an instant.
Haley, however, remained oblivious. Thinking Thomas was about to reprimand me on her behalf, she smirked triumphantly and nodded. “Yes, Mr. Siegel, it’s this little bitch-”
Before she could finish her sentence, Thomas delivered a swift kick to her stomach. Haley was flung backward. She crashed into a nearby car with a loud bang.
After witnessing the scene, Joel collapsed to his knees while shaking like a leaf. His voice trembled as he begged for mercy, “Mr. Siegel, I’m sorry… I didn’t know. This foolish woman is at fault for the misunderstanding with your wife. Please, forgive me just this once…”
He even began to bow to Thomas, but Thomas didn’t spare him a glance.
Instead, Thomas strode toward me and pulled me gently into his arms. His entire body trembled as he whispered, “Emma, I’m so sorry for arriving late… I’ve made you suffer. Forgive me.”
Everyone around us stood frozen. They were too stunned to react.
Haley, in particular, was too shocked to even scream. Her eyes widened as she stared at me in disbelief.
“Emma Larkin… you weren’t lying?” she gasped, drawing in a sharp breath.
Before Haley could say another word, Joel turned on her in a fit of rage, raining kicks and punches on her.
“This is all your fault, you stupid woman! How dare you lay a hand on Mrs. Siegel! I’m just Mr. Siegel’s driver. How dare you hit his wife? It’s over. Everything’s over!”
