Chapter 3 The Final Exit
Andy was still a kid–he hadn’t quite learned how to hide his emotions.
When he heard that this house would be theirs, he lit up. “Really?”
Henry quickly pressed down on his arm. “Andy, don’t say that! This is Mr. Chase’s home.”
Then he sighed, looking helpless.
“Chase, I never meant to come between you and Linda. I’ll leave right now–just don’t be upset.”
As soon as he said it, Linda rushed over and grabbed his arm.
Henry gently steadied her as she stumbled into his arms.
“Careful,” he whispered, holding her
waist.

Linda and I locked eyes. She quickly pushed Henry away and took a step back.
A flash of dissatisfaction crossed Henry’s eyes before it melted into gentle warmth.
“Linda, please stop trying to convince. me. We’re the ones intruding here.”
His voice cracked a little, his eyes reddening as though the world had wronged him.
Andy threw himself into Henry’s arms and sobbed uncontrollably.
“Dad, don’t be sad. It’s all my fault. If I wasn’t such a burden, you wouldn’t have to suffer so much.”
I watched the father–son performance in silence, thinking the acting world had truly missed out on these two.

Linda, meanwhile, looked at them with a heart full of sympathy.
And the more she pitied them, the angrier she got. She turned to me, eyes blazing.
“Chase, I’m the one who asked them to move in. Henry’s place has a leak—it’ll take days to fix. This villa is huge anyway, so I told them to stay here. I thought it might help you two patch things up. But I never expected you to be so hostile. Andy’s just a kid–how could you be so heartless?”
I hadn’t planned on arguing with Linda anymore, but her idiocy made it impossible to stay silent.
I scoffed. “Linda, if your eyes are broken, go see a doctor.
“They’ve been here ten minutes, and I’ve said exactly one sentence. The rest you all just made up. Honestly, with

imaginations like yours, it’s a shame none of you won the Nobel Prize for Literature. And by the way, I’m moving out. You think I care who you let live here?”
Linda stared at me, confused–unsure whether I truly didn’t care or if this was just some ploy.
It wasn’t until I brushed past her, dragging my suitcase without looking back, that she finally realized-
I might actually go through with the divorce.
Because I had given up on even protecting the house.
Her mind drifted back to six months ago, when Henry got into a car accident.
After he was discharged, Andy had said it was just the two of them at home, and he was afraid he couldn’t take care of his

So Linda suggested they move into the villa.
But when I found out. I trashed the place in a rage. I screamed that if she let that piece of trash move in, I’d stab him myself.
She had no choice but to back down.
Still, she gave me the cold shoulder for three straight months.
It wasn’t until Tammy was hospitalized for an allergic reaction and I was barred from visiting her that I finally caved and apologized to Linda. Only then did things start to thaw between us.
But from that moment on, I was never the same.
I stopped arguing. Stopped caring. I became quiet and obedient. Loyal like a

Linda had even felt secretly proud of my transformation.
She thought she had tamed the once- proud heir of the Sue family—never realizing that was when my love for her began to die… piece by piece… until there was nothing left.
Linda was about to follow me out the door, but Henry suddenly cried out.
She turned back to see Andy limp in his arms, unconscious.
Henry shouted, “Linda! What’s wrong with Andy?”
Tammy panicked, grabbing Linda’s sleeve. “Mom! Hurry, take Andy to the hospital!”
Not a single thought for me, her father, who was leaving.

Linda nodded quickly. “I’ll go get the car. Henry, don’t worry–I’m here.”
Outside, snow had started to fall, fast and heavy.
The sudden blizzard meant I couldn’t hail a ride.
This villa community was far from the city, so I had no choice but to walk through the snow and ice.
Linda’s car pulled up beside me. She rolled down the window, frowning.
“Get in.”
I ignored her.
She snapped, “Chase, how long are you going to keep this up?”
Her phone was on speaker, and my mother’s voice came through:

“Chase, if you keep this up, I’ll pretend I never had a son.”
I let out a quiet laugh. “Well, you’ve already done a fine job of that, ma’am.”
