Chapter 22
Stella barely recognized Ryan.
–
He still looked like himself, but completely trashed dead eyes, scruffy beard, dark circles that screamed “I
haven’t slept in days.”
The old Ryan was always put-together and ambitious, eyes bright when he talked about their future plans.
That Ryan would never let himself look this fucking rough.
He grabbed Stella’s wrist, totally manic.
“Stella, there’s sketchy people everywhere. Don’t trust this guy…”
“Stella, just come home with me. I’ll give you whatever you want.”
“Are you literally stalking me right now? Let go!”
Stella looked creeped out, getting major stalker vibes from how Ryan had tracked her down.
He’d probably been watching her 24/7!
She tried to pull away, but he was way stronger.
“No way… I’m not letting you go.”
Ryan gripped tighter, panicking that she’d vanish if he loosened up even a little.
That’s when buzzed Marcus finally stepped in, breaking Ryan’s grip.
“Get your hands off her!”
If Ryan had been holding onto any sanity before, he completely lost it now.
His eyes went psycho as he shoved Marcus back, losing his shit: “I’m talking to MY girl! Stay out of it,
asshole!”
Ryan’s total meltdown made Stella freeze this wasn’t the guy she used to know at all.
Marcus couldn’t just stand there while Ryan went full crazy. As he stepped up, Ryan swung at him hard.
“She’s MINE, you hear me? You can’t fucking have her!”

Marcus was too drunk to dodge properly. The punch caught him right in the face with this nasty sound.
“Marcus!”
Stella immediately got between them and slapped Ryan across the face without thinking twice.
“Ryan, what the hell is wrong with you?!”
Her slap cracked through the night air like a gunshot.
Ryan stood there frozen.
The stinging pain on his face sobered him up a bit, and his grip automatically loosened.
‘You… hit me for him?”
Stella was completely focused on Marcus, not giving a shit about Ryan’s feelings.
Seeing how much Stella cared about Marcus made Ryan even more desperate, his eyes going red with rage.
That kind of concern used to be his and only his.
Why was she suddenly giving it to someone else?
–
That was HIS thing he didn’t want anyone else taking it!
Stella, you never used to lose your temper with me. I just punched some guy who was hitting on you. Why re you treating me like this?”
tella was so done with his bullshit: “You said it yourself – that was BEFORE! Ryan, you’re crying about me lapping you? What about when you hit ME? This slap makes us even!”
The world’s pretty fair, Ryan. You didn’t care about my feelings then, so I don’t give a damn about yours
LOW.”
yan froze, remembering that slap he’d given her in her bedroom.
Everything was coming back to bite him in the ass.
Even. They were even now.
He kept repeating those words in his head, suddenly feeling completely powerless.
The screech of tires on asphalt cut through their standoff.
Ryan turned and his face went white.

A car was speeding straight toward them, and through the windshield he could see Ivy behind the wheel.
Her face was twisted with pure rage and insanity, eyes locked on Stella, no sign of slowing down.
The car got closer and closer – it was gonna slam right into Stella!
Stella couldn’t react fast enough. Her eyes went wide, and just as the car was about to hit, Ryan shoved her
out of the way.
The car plowed straight into Ryan, launching his body like a rag doll before he crashed hard onto the
pavement.
When the cops dragged Ivy away, she was laughing like a complete psychopath.
She was screaming the most vicious curses at Ryan and Stella, cackling when she saw Ryan lying in a pool of
blood.
She was laughing and crying at the same time.
Eventually her voice started breaking.
Ryan, I hope you rot in hell.”
‘Stella, why does everyone fucking love you…”
In the blood, Ryan used what consciousness he had left to search for Stella.
‘Stel… la…”
When he spotted her, he used every ounce of strength to reach out toward her, but she stepped back.
Why?
He’d literally risked his life to save her – why wouldn’t she forgive him?
Ryan tried to speak but didn’t have the energy.
He wanted to grab Stella and ask her why.
But in the end, he could only watch helplessly as the paramedics loaded him onto a stretcher.
Outside the ambulance, Stella watched him with complicated emotions as they lifted him in. She didn’t
follow.
She didn’t move at all.
