Only when the car stopped at the Watts family gate did Elvin speak, his voice plaintive: “Why are you ignoring me?”
Bianca froze mid–motion, utterly bewildered as she stared at him—a giant question mark hanging over her head.
Elvin turned his face away, unable to bear her expression. “If you’re ignoring me because of what I said earlier, I take it back. Pretend it never happened.”
He feared those words would make her retreat into her shell, leaving him no chance to get close again. Though he desired her intensely, he’d never force her if unwilling. Those confessions should’ve stayed buried.
Bianca hadn’t expected this. She wasn’t ignoring him–just refusing to plunge back into darkness. After a long silence, she finally spoke: “Elvin, you’re wonderful. We could actually be friends.”

Watching her roadside silhouette, he rolled down the passenger window. “Go inside. I’ll leave after seeing you enter.” All earlier nonchalance vanished, replaced by unwavering devotion.
But his shifting moods made trust impossible. Turning away, she entered the Watts family residence.
Elvin slumped against the headrest as her figure disappeared, fingers gently pinching his brow. In the heavy silence, he pulled out a
cigarette. Remembering Bianca hated smoke, he tossed it aside unlit. Around her, all his principles crumbled.

Winnie jolted awake from a nightmare with a piercing wail. Downstairs, Katelyn rushed upstairs upon hearing the cries.
