Winnie blinked awake drowsily, immediately beaming upon seeing him. “Daddy! You’re back!”
Blair helped her sit up, cupping her face apologetically. “Kiddo,” he whispered, “how about visiting Aunt Diane?”
Winnie nodded eagerly. “Yes! I’ve been so worried about Aunt Diane! I wanted to visit, but Katelyn wouldn’t let me.
Blair probed carefully, “What if Mommy says no too?”
Winnie’s expression darkened at the mention of Bianca. “That’s my choice, Daddy. I’ll go wherever I want. Mommy doesn’t even care–she won’t even let me eat shrimp!”
Her words left Blair with a heavy heart. Remembering Diane’s waiting, he steeled himself and scooped Winnie up.
After dressing her, they left immediately
It was nearly midnight when they departed.
They reached the hospital around half past twelve.
Winnie pushed the hospital door open to find Diane scrolling through videos.
Hearing the noise, Diane set her phone down instantly. Her face lit up as she spread her arms wide. “Winnie! Come here, sweetheart!”
Winnie dashed over and threw herself into Diane’s embrace.

Diane Huffman had gauze wrapped around her head, looking noticeably thinner in her hospital gown.
Winnie Avery hugged her tightly, tears welled up in her eyes.
“Aunt Diane, do you know how much I missed you? I couldn’t sleep without you.”
Diane held Winnie close, nuzzling the top of her head. “I’m just the same, sweetheart. I couldn’t sleep either without you nearby.”
Though she said this, Diane had actually slept before Winnie arrived.
The reason she suddenly asked Winnie to come was Maxine’s warning: Bianca Watts had come to Harmony Residence, and Winnie’s affection might be swayed.
So Diane pretended to have insomnia, wanting Winnie by her side.
Blair Avery couldn’t refuse her, even this late at night.
Winnie snuggled into Diane’s arms, seeking comfort.
Diane coaxed and praised her until Winnie’s spirits lifted.
Watching them cling together whispering sweet nothings, Blair felt a lump in his throat.
After what seemed like forever on the hospital bed, Blair finally spoke. “Winnie, Dad will take you back to Harmony Residence.”
Winnie shook her head stubbornly. “No! I want to stay with Aunt Diane.”
Just as Blair insisted, Diane intervened. “Blair, let her stay with me. Just this once.”
