chapter280
He carried the fresh scent of shower gel, yet Bianca caught whiffs of her own sour smell.
Feverish and unwashed, she knew she carried an odor.
Even so, Elvin didn’t pull away. Instead, he held her tighter.
Though exhausted moments ago, Elvin now lay wide awake.
Bianca stayed awake too. Elvin slid his left arm beneath her neck and his right around her waist, pressing her entire back against his chest.
Their body heat mingled through thin shirts, and Bianca could feel Elvin’s skin burning against hers.
Silence hung thickly, neither speaking.
Time passed, but sleep still eluded Bianca.
Elvin remained awake as well.
He brushed his lips against the tip of her ear, nipping gently as he murmured, “Worried about Winnie?”
The ticklish sensation made Bianca flinch. “No,” she replied, “I’m not worried about anyone.”
Elvin saw through her. “If you want to see her, let’s go. I’ll come with you.”
After a pause, Bianca relented. “Okay.”

They got ready and headed to the pediatric ward.
Approaching the ward, Bianca spotted Blair Avery leaning against Diane Huffman’s shoulder from afar.
Her steps paused, and Elvin halted beside her.
Bianca walked past them straight to the doctor’s office.
Only hearing directly from the doctor that Winnie was fine would ease her mind.
The on–duty doctor explained Winnie’s condition.
As a doctor herself, Bianca understood the situation immediately.
The reassurance finally settled her nerves.
Leaving the office, she glanced toward Blair again.
He remained nestled against Diane’s shoulder.
Their backs turned to Bianca, bodies pressed close together–a picture of intimacy.
Knowing Bianca’s heart ached, Elvin stepped forward. Without waiting for consent, he swept her into his arms.
At the same time, Elvin looked down at Bianca and said to her, “Baby, if you don’t mind, I can be the man you lean on.”
Bianca met Elvin’s downward gaze and didn’t respond.
The commotion over here was noticeable, so Diane instinctively glanced over.

But when she looked, she only saw Elvin carrying Bianca away, their backs receding.
Diane had vaguely caught every word Elvin just said to Bianca.
She couldn’t help thinking Elvin had deliberately said those words for her to hear.
Elvin must have seen her with Blair, so he was green with envy.
Diane thought she should find time to explain things to Elvin.
Just as countless thoughts swirled in his mind, Blair suddenly opened his eyes.
“Diane.”
After sitting upright, Blair turned to look at Diane. Seeing her troubled expression, he couldn’t help calling out to her.
Diane snapped back to reality at his soft call. She lifted her face toward Blair and asked gently, “Blair, what is it?”
Blair gazed at Diane with concern, his voice tender as he asked, “Are you tired?”
Hearing this, Diane shook her head and smiled. “No, I’m not tired.”
Blair reached out and touched the top of Diane’s head. His tone affectionate, he said, “Let me take you home.”
At this, Diane refused: “It’s fine. I’ll stay here with you and Winnie.”
Blair frowned. “I’ll stay with her. You should go rest. You’ve got experiments tomorrow.”

Seeing his insistence, Diane reluctantly agreed. “Alright then.”
Blair stood up and extended his hand toward Diane. “Come on, I’ll take you.”
Staring at that outstretched hand, Diane felt momentarily dazed. She inexplicably recalled how Elvin had been holding Bianca earlier.
She thought perhaps this was an excellent opportunity.
If Elvin had misunderstood her, now would be the perfect time to explain.
After a moment’s reflection, Diane smiled lightly. “Blair, you’re exhausted already. No need to make a special trip. I’ll just grab a taxi.”
