Charlotte glanced at the caller ID and hurried to hang up.
Kathy saw this and immediately guessed it must be that middle–aged man calling. “Who is it?”
“No one, don’t worry about it.”
“Let me see.”
“Mom, stop it.” Charlotte quickly hung up and stuffed the phone back in her bag.
Kathy was furious. She jabbed Charlotte’s forehead hard. “You little brat, are you trying to drive me crazy?”
“Why are you so disobedient? I told you not to date Timothy, but you wouldn’t listen. And now, you’ve gone and found yourself an old man. Your father and I are only in our forties, and you’re dating someone almost our age…”
The more Kathy spoke, the angrier she got. In her mind, she couldn’t help but picture a greasy middle–aged man sweet–talking her daughter into his arms.
The more she thought about it, the more she felt like coughing up blood.
Charlotte’s head throbbed from listening. “Mom, what are you talking about? He’s not that bad.”
“Oh, so by your logic, you really are dating someone, right? Who is he? Do you have a photo? Show me!”
“Mom, stop it, ugh…” Charlotte’s stomach lurched again, and she hurriedly told the driver to pull over.

Unable to hold back her morning sickness, Charlotte pushed open the car door and got out. Then she squatted by the roadside and started vomiting violently.
Seeing this, Kathy was completely stunned.
She hurried out of the car, angrily pressing Charlotte. “Lottie, tell me the truth right now. How far have you gone with that old man?”

“Lottie, where are you going? Stop right there!”
“Mom, just go home! I really have something urgent to do.” Charlotte was wearing sneakers today and ran off at top speed.
Kathy, in her high heels, couldn’t possibly catch up.
She ran across two intersections in a row, making sure her mother wasn’t following.
Only then did Charlotte dare to stop and catch her breath.
“Thank goodness she didn’t catch up.”
She patted her chest and sat down on a bench by the street.
