Chapter 17
Edward hesitated and refused to agree until Alexander’s expression turned icy. Only then did he nod silently.
Alexander’s chest felt heavy now. Every wrong he’d done to Jennifer had come back like a boomerang.
For several days straight, Jennifer and Dylan stayed busy at the shop.
With him and Tiantian around, Jennifer gradually let go of the past.
Sunlight streamed through the window today, painting the scene like a watercolor painting.
Dylan would soon leave for a business trip with his film crew, leaving him worried about Jennifer.
“Tiantian, take good care of your aunt while I’m away. Don’t let anyone bully her,” Dylan said, squatting to hold Tiantian’s hands.
Tiantian’s eyes sparkled. “Don’t worry!” She even high–fived Dylan before. he left.
Jennifer was cleaning the counter when that familiar car pulled up outside again.
Dylan released Tiantian’s hands, looked up, and his face immediately.
darkened.
Jennifer averted her gaze and drew the shop’s curtains.
“Want me to handle it?” Dylan asked Jennifer seriously.
“It’s fine. I can manage.” Jennifer walked straight outside.
The black car idled outside, Alexander making no move to exit.
Dylan naturally placed a hand on Jennifer’s shoulder.
After a long moment, Edward finally stepped out. He scanned the coffee house before speaking softly to Jennifer, “Auntie, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have pulled you down the steps that day.” His voice was barely audible.
“Louder!” a voice called from the car.
Edward repeated his apology at full volume.
Jennifer felt nothing but disgust, vividly recalling how he’d feigned innocence after causing her fall. Using a child to win forgiveness was utterly pathetic.
“I’ve built my own life now. Besides, you and I have no ties left. Please stop bothering me.” Jennifer turned to close the door.
“Wait!” Alexander emerged, adjusting his tie. “I came to apologize today! I was wrong before! But the truth is Edward isn’t my child. Nicole fabricated it. I’ve never betrayed you!” His pleading tone met Jennifer’s
back.
“Jennifer-”
The shop door slammed shut before he could finish.
“If you won’t forgive me, I’m not leaving.” Receiving no response, he stood rigidly before suddenly kneeling rigidly right there.
“Want me to shoo him away?” Dylan asked, massaging Jennifer’s tense shoulders.
“But this is my personal mess. I don’t want to drag you and Tiantian into
it.”
“What’s that? Aren’t Tiantian and I family now? Can’t let you face this harassment alone.” Dylan teased lightly, tapping her nose.
“Thank you both.”
Jennifer looked at Dylan and Tina and smiled contentedly.
She had never experienced such peace with Alexander.
Just thinking about it made Jennifer happy.
Alexander kept kneeling on the ground until the sun set, with no sign of Jennifer coming out.
Even after darkness fell, Alexander remained kneeling in the same spot.
