Chapter 3
Falling from such a height didn’t leave a pretty picture at all.
My soul floated in the air, and one glance at my corpse saddened me.
My face was mangled beyond recognition, every joint in my body was dislocated, and my skin was separated from the bones. I looked like a filthy, broken, and unwanted ragged doll.
I was glad that it was late at night, and there were only a handful of pedestrians.
Someone called the police.
Soon, the sound of sirens rang out.
Looking up, I saw a bunch of lights lighting up as well as the curious
crowd.
In fact, it wasn’t midnight yet.
But half an hour wouldn’t make much of a difference.
I saw Harold’s car coming in this direction.
Was he coming back to celebrate my birthday?
As I stared at my gruesome body being cordoned off by police tape, I couldn’t help but think Harold must be so thrilled when he learned about my death.
The police were investigating when Harold drove his car into the complex from the gate.
I didn’t feel a thing.
Maybe one’s emotions and feelings faded away the second they died.
My soul drifted toward Harold uncontrollably.
He stepped out of his car, followed by Lilian.
Curious, she stood on tiptoe, wanting to see what was going on.
He pressed her head against his embrace and said in a gentle tone that I had never heard before, “Don’t look, Lilian. You’ll be scared.”
She nodded meekly and said when snuggling in his arms, acting cute, “Harold, you promised me to stay with me at least till midnight, right?”
With a doting smile, he stroked her head and soothed her, “Be good, Lilian. I’ll be with you after I’m done with work, OK?”
Pouting, she muttered unhappily, “Of all times, that person had to jump. now?”
Hearing this, he tapped her head lightly. “Lilian,
on’t say that. Show some respect. As a forensic doctor, it’s my job to dissect the corpse to assist in the police’s investigation.”
So, he wasn’t back to celebrate my birthday; he was summoned back to dissect my corpse.
I was glad I didn’t hold my hopes up.
Shaking his arm, Lilian muttered while burying her head in his embrace. “OK, OK. I know. I just want to spend more time with you.”
He pinched her cheek helplessly.
Floating in mid–air, I had to admit I was quite envious of them.

I had never acted cute in front of him, and he had never been this gentle. toward me.
All he had for me was hatred, and I had always walked on eggshells around him.
Worried that it might not be safe for Lilian to go upstairs alone, Harold had a quick word with his assistant, Vicente Moreno, and then walked
her back.
Pushing open the door, she said briskly, “Clarissa, we’re back!”
She probably wanted to show up, telling me about the beautiful fireworks and the breathtaking drones.
But what greeted her was silence and darkness.
