Chapter 5
During Jason’s first dialysis session, he lay on the hospital bed, struggling and screaming in pain.
Jennifer and Laura couldn’t hold Jason down.
The dialysis lasted from morning until nightfall, and Jason cried that he never wanted to do it again.
But without dialysis, death was his only option.
Laura couldn’t bear to watch Jason die like this.
She said, “With all our relatives and friends, surely someone will
be a match for Jason.”
The next day, Laura went around asking everyone for help.
But after what happened with me, nobody wanted anything to
do with her.
She begged, “Please just get tested for compatibility. The doctor says you can live with one kidney. We’ll take care of you for the rest of your life.”
Only my past self would have believed such promises.
“Laura, no amount of money can buy a kidney. This is God’s will. Give up.”

These were the exact words Laura had once said to me.
Laura was prepared for this and knew she needed to show sincerity to convince someone to donate a kidney.
But the cheap gifts she offered couldn’t possibly persuade anyone to donate.
Her relatives found her annoying and kicked her out.
Laura wouldn’t give up and stood outside their door, yelling, “I’m just asking you to get tested, not actually donate your kidney. Can’t you at least try?”
These relatives were their last hope, so they couldn’t give up.
Laura and Kyle split up to take action. Laura went to Mary’s grandson’s school and lied that Mary was sick, trying to take him to the hospital for compatibility testing.
Fortunately, an alert teacher noticed something was wrong and informed Mary.
Mary rushed to save her grandson but was blocked at her front door by Kyle and Jennifer.
They wouldn’t let her leave.
Mary was frantic, and a physical altercation broke out.

Neighbors heard the commotion and called the police.

Everyone was taken to the police station. Officers also brought Laura in from the hospital.
Mary shouted angrily, “When Brittany needed a kidney transplant, none of you agreed. This is your karma!”
Now all the relatives knew what they had done. Mary’s public accusation made Kyle’s family the target of everyone’s contempt.
My relatives avoided them, afraid of being forced to donate kidneys.
Back home, Jennifer muttered curses, “This is all Brittany’s fault. She must have infected Jason with her disease.”
Though everyone knew uremia isn’t contagious, they could only comfort themselves by blaming me.
Laura suddenly realized they might have been deceived.
These days, Jason was so weak he couldn’t get out of bed and would gasp for breath after walking a few steps, yet that day when I was smashing things at home, I had the strength of someone who didn’t seem sick at all.
Laura immediately tried to call me, only to discover I had blocked her number.
