With his hypocrisy exposed, Gary’s soul-
searching question hung in the air. Susan’s
face was a masterpiece of conflicted
emotions. After a long silence, she choked
out, “I… I didn’t mean to… I had my
reasons…”
She burst into tears and ran to their bedroom.
Gary, unable to handle her tears, followed her.
Their argument echoed from inside.
“Susan, I wasn’t yelling at you, but what you
did was wrong!”
–
“I gave you all my money over twenty
thousand dollars! You were supposed to send
Molly three thousand a month, but you only
sent three hundred! How were they supposed
to live?”
Susan sobbed, “You only blame me! Do you
ever think about my struggles? Yes, you give
me all your money, but I have to run this
household! Living in the city is expensive.
Everything costs money! There are apartment
fees, parking fees, even garbage disposal
costs money here! And I need to keep up
appearances! I have to buy makeup and
clothes, expensive suits for you… and Chloe’s
school costs a fortune
several thousand
dollars a semester! And your Audi? I saved
every penny to help you buy it! You only think
about yourself… Waaah…”
Her complaints melted Gary’s heart.
“Susan, don’t cry. That’s not what I meant.
Three hundred dollars a month for Molly is…
is too little. I’ll send her three thousand from
now on!”
“Okay, okay. Don’t cry, I hate seeing you
cry…”
Listening to them from outside, nausea
churned in my stomach. My heart had
completely turned to ice. This divorce was
happening.
