When I was a kid, I absentmindedly said
something that ended up saving Grandpa Stern, the richest guy in town.
He swore right then and there that whichever of his grandsons, Zack or Cody, married me would inherit his billions.
Graduation year rolls around, and everyone just knew I’d pick Cody, because I’d been head-
over–heels for him for like, a decade.
Last time around, I did choose Cody.
Turns out, he was so hung up on some promise

he made to my fake sister, Britney, that he kept
his hands off me, like, forever.
He even just stood there and watched some
rando kill me right in front of him. Didn’t lift a
finger.
This time, I’m doing things differently.
I ignored his heartbroken eyes begging me to stay, away from that trashy man and his gold- digging girlfriend. Everyone was shocked when I picked his disabled brother, Zack Stern.
Now Cody’s losing it, begging me to take him back.
It was Grandpa Stern’s birthday bash, and I
brought a jade vase I snagged at an auction as
a gift.
As soon as I walked in, I saw Cody fixing
Britney’s hair.
He saw me, glanced at the gift box in my
hands, and smirked.
“Britney, you’re really trying hard to marry me,
huh? Buying some overpriced vase just to suck
up to my grandpa.
“Don’t think just because Grandpa likes you,
you’ve got this in the bag. I still gotta want
you.”
I looked at Cody, ice in my veins, and answered
flatly, “Grandpa and I both love this antique
piece. I respect Grandpa, so I got him a gift.
Don’t flatter yourself.‘
He scoffed, “You’ve been drooling over me for
ten years. No one’s gonna believe that crap.
وو
Britney, who was clearly having a thing with
Cody, looked at me with those big, sad eyes.
