After a moment’s consideration, he chose to ignore Caleb, fixing his gaze on me instead.
“Evelyn, it’s been long enough. Even if you’re angry, it’s time to let it go. Come home with me.”
I met his gaze calmly.
“This is my home now. Mr. Thorne, please leave. I never want to see you again.”
Damien clearly hadn’t expected that. His eyes turned savage, as if trying to bore holes through me.
“Evelyn Price, what are you saying? Are you just trying to spite me? Or after all these years with me, do you still have feelings for Caleb Scott?”
Damien had always been keenly aware of my youthful feelings for Caleb. Even after five years with him, Caleb was still a thorn in his side. If anyone so much as mentioned Caleb’s name accidentally, Damien would make sure they paid for it.
But there was one thing he’d always misunderstood.
The moment I chose to be with him, I had decided to let go of Caleb. Yet, even now, Damien still hadn’t grasped that.
And I certainly wasn’t going to explain it to him.
To make him finally give up, I decided to just confirm his suspicions.
“That’s right, I do like Caleb. At least he would never hurt me over and over again. Damien Thorne, if I could turn back time, five years ago, I would never have chosen to be with you.”
“You enabled someone to kill my mother. I will never* forgive you for that, not in this lifetime. If you have any conscience left, never show your face to me again!”
Damien, however, seemed not to hear my words. He stared at me, and after a long silence, he suddenly smiled.
“Evelyn Price, don’t dream of it.”
“Unless I’m dead, you will never be with anyone else.”
I didn’t want to argue anymore. I grabbed Caleb’s hand and turned to leave.
Even after we’d walked a good distance, Damien’s gaze remained glued to me.
For the next few days, he didn’t appear.
Life seemed to return to its usual calm, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that a storm was brewing.
And sure enough, my premonition was confirmed once again.
That afternoon, I arrived at the company but couldn’t find Caleb anywhere.
Immediately after, my phone buzzed with a text from an unknown number.
“If you want to see Caleb Scott, come to your company’s rooftop. Alone.”
I didn’t need to think twice. I knew exactly who the text was from.
After being his wife‘ for five years, I understood Damien Thorne all too well.
So, I went to the rooftop alone.
The scene that greeted me made my heart leap into my throat.
Damien Thorne stood at the very edge of the safety railing, clutching Caleb Scott. And that cold, black object? It was pressed against Caleb’s
head.
“Evelyn, if this man dies, will there be nothing left between us?”
I forced down my surging terror, trying to appear calm.
“Damien Thorne, let Caleb go, or I swear I’ll hate you for the rest of my life!”
Hearing that, Damien just smiled again.
“Hate?”
“Good. Better than indifference, right? Evelyn, even if you hate me for your entire life, I will still be with you forever!”
With that, he pulled the trigger.
“No! Don’t! Damien Thorne, if you kill him, I swear I’ll die with him!”
