***Chapter 5**
Clearly, my silence had only bolstered Blair’s arrogance. Julian’s call came through quickly.
“Cassandra, what the hell are you doing now?!” Julian’s voice on the other end sounded strained, almost distorted with rage. “What you said made Blair cry herself to hysterics, almost losing the baby! Get your ass back to the villa and apologize to Blair right now!”
By now, his anger stirred no ripple in my heart, like meaningless barking.
I calmly replied, “Which part of what I said wasn’t true? You got her pregnant before we were even divorced, didn’t you? Blair and her mother are both shameful mistresses.
Suddenly, the supermarket erupted into chaos. I heard someone scream, “Someone’s having a seizure, they’re convulsing! Call an ambulance!”
Julian also heard the commotion on my end. A mix of shock and wild joy surged through him. He scoffed, “The time has come! The first infected person is about to appear! If you don’t want to die, get your ass back here and kneel at the villa gates, bowing three hundred times! Blair is kind–hearted; she might just save your life.”
I immediately dropped my phone and rushed towards the jostling crowd of onlookers, shouting, “Move aside! I’m a doctor!”
Then, before the convulsing man could start biting anyone, I grabbed a fallen rolling pin and slammed it hard into the back of his head. The
man twitched twice and collapsed to the ground, no longer moving.
“It’s over.” I took a deep breath, my heart pounding so fast it felt like it would leap out of my throat.
I picked up my phone, but fearing the man might suddenly jump up, I plopped down onto his body.
On the other end of the line, Julian was still rambling on. “Now Blair is my legal wife; you can only be my mistress. Considering all our years together, I won’t treat you badly, but you need to be grateful. Once Blair’s child is born, you’ll be in charge of taking care of them…”
I was too disgusted to listen to any more of his BS. I scoffed, feigning confusion. “What infected person? You’re not talking about this nutjob l just knocked out with a stick, are you?”
I hung up the phone and immediately notified the nearby security teams on standby, telling them I’d found the first patient and to quickly come to the supermarket to maintain order.
Two months reborn, and I wasn’t some idiot like Julian, only thinking about hoarding supplies and fortifying a villa to cower until they die.
I had already contacted the director of the research institute, reporting on a hidden lab in City A that was engaging in some shady dealings.
I just hadn’t expected someone to destroy the lab early, and the virus to disappear. So, I immediately went to the supermarket where the first infected person appeared in my past life, lying in wait for him to show up. Thankfully, I stopped everything before the man could ingest human blood and fully transform into a zombie.
I bound the man tightly and directed the security guards to lift him into the vehicle.
I patted his cheek. Though I’d given him a good beating, the bruises on his face couldn’t hide his firm, handsome features.
Everything finally settled. I let out a long breath, slowly leaning against the car window, enjoying the gentle breeze free of any blood or putrid smells.
At the suburban villa, Julian listened to the busy signal on his phone, his face dark as a storm cloud.
Blair glanced at him, carefully placing her noticeably pregnant belly beside him.
“Julian, is Cassie really not willing to come back? I’ll go find her now and beg her not to be so stubborn!”
“Let her be!” Julian snorted irritably, throwing his phone far away.
Blair’s eyes darted around, and she said coyly, “Sister just doesn’t believe I was reborn. Once she sees all the zombies outside, she’ll change her mind.”
Julian’s mind was already picturing me crying and begging him to let me in.
He sighed. “Blair, you’re so kind–hearted. Cassandra slandered you online like that, and you’re still willing to give her a chance to live. You’re my wife now. We can’t be too good to her and give her unnecessary ideas.”
Then, his voice turned cold. “Still, we need to teach her a lesson, Cassandra needs to kneel at the villa gates and sincerely apologize to you and your mother, bowing down three hundred times!”
Blair pondered for a moment before reluctantly saying, “Don’t be too hard on Sister. The maids, Martha and Lucy, have been let go by Dad, so let her stay here as a servant.”
The two embraced sweetly, lost in their fantasy of working me like a dog.
Three days passed, but the outside world remained calm as ever.
