Chapter 135
Richard shot Charlotte a cold glance, his tone unkind. “I don’t teach chess to just anyone, and I’m not particularly fond of it
either. I just enjoy having Sasa visit when she has time to play a game or two with me.”
Charlotte’s expression darkened. She could no longer maintain her composed and elegant demeanor. Feeling utterly sidelined,
she couldn’t understand what kind of charm Sarah had used to win over Richard so completely.
Unable to hold back her frustration, she finally snapped, “Grandpa, Miss Sanders is an outsider. I’m the one who’s going t
your granddaughter–in–law.”
James immediately interjected, “Charlotte, what nonsense are you spouting?”
“Why? Am I wrong?” Charlotte insisted stubbornly. “At the end of the day, I’m the one you’re going to marry.”
Richard set a white chess piece on the board with a heavy thud and said coldly, “James, don’t you have work to do at the
company? Take her and leave. I’m doing just fine, so you don’t need to hover around and bother me.”

“Alright, Grandpa, I’ll take Charlotte home.” James cast an apologetic glance at Sarah, only to realise she hadn’t even looked at
him.
He grabbed Charlotte’s hand. “Let’s go.”
Charlotte, visibly displeased, reluctantly followed James out of the house,
Once outside, James asked, “Why did you show up unannounced?”
“James, I misspoke earlier, but what I said is still the truth. I’m the one you’re going to marry, so why does Grandpa have to treat me so harshly? And why didn’t you tell me you were coming here? She was here too! Watching you three laughing together, I felt like I was the outsider. I just wanted to make an effort to fit into your family. I know Grandpa doesn’t like me, so I came to show my sincerity.” As she spoke, tears began streaming down her face.
Seeing her dejected appearance, James’s heart softened. Charlotte, who always appeared graceful and poised in front of others, had clearly lost her composure due to her feelings of hurt.
“I was too hasty. Grandpa hasn’t been feeling well, and he’s just used to having Sarah around. Try to be understanding. I’ll bring you over next time to spend more time with him.”
Charlotte brushed a loose strand of hair from her face, tears still welling up in her eyes. “James, I understand. I won’t make
things difficult for you.”
“Let’s head back, then.”
“I drove myself here. You go on ahead. I’ll visit my mom afterward,” Charlotte replied, polar to her car.
James didn’t argue. “Alright. Drive safely.”

Inside the house, Sarah and Richard had already played two games of chess, with Sarah losing both times.
As she placed another black piece on the board, her phone buzzed. She picked it up and saw Zachary’s name on the screen.
Apologetically, she turned to Grandpa. “Grandpa, excuse me for a moment. I need to take this call.”
“Mr. Reynolds?” she asked, her voice tinged with curiosity.
On the other end, Zachary chuckled lightly. “Sasa, where are you?”

“I’m at the Chancer family estate,” she replied.
“What are y
you doing there? Is everything taken care of?” His tone carried a hint of inquiry, almost like he was questioning her.
Sarah blinked in surprise at his words. “Grandpa hasn’t been feeling well, so I came to check on him and play some chess.”
“I’ll pick you up in an hour,” Zachary said.
“For what-“Before she could finish her sentence, he hung up.
She stared at her phone, baffled. What’s going on?
Returning to the chessboard, Richard looked at her knowingly and asked, “Was it something urgent?”
“It’s just a friend saying they’ll pick me up later. I’m not sure why.”
Grandpa nodded thoughtfully. “Alright then, let’s get in a couple more games before you leave.”
“Okay.” Sarah smiled, relieved she didn’t have to explain further.
