Lucy stormed toward the study, her frustration boiling over after the events at school. She intended to tell James everything.
As she approached the door, she heard him on the phone. The mention of Sarah’s name made her pause, and she pressed her ear
to the door.
“Are
you
free this weekend? Grandpa hasn’t been eating well, and he really wants to see you. Could you come keep him
company?”
After a brief pause, his tone softened. “Alright, Sarah. Should I come pick you up?”
Sarah?!
Lucy’s face contorted with anger. How could James still be in contact with that woman?
That conniving woman! Why was her brother still speaking to her? Wasn’t Sarah the person he claimed to hate the most? Yet his
tone on the phone was unusually gentle–something Lucy had never heard him use with anyone else.
Downstairs, Charlotte was preparing a fruit platter. Lucy quickly descended the stairs, deliberately making her movements heavy
and grabbing two glasses of water, her expression gloomy.
Charlotte, ever observant, approached her. “Lucy, what’s wrong? You seem upset.
Feigning concern, Lucy sighed. “Charlotte, are you and my brother doing okay? Did something happen between you two?”
Charlotte hesitated, her smile faltering slightly. “Of course, we’re fine. What makes you ask? Did James say something?”
“No, but I can’t help worrying,” Lucy said, her tone deliberately ominous. “I just went to his study, and guess what? I overheard
him on the phone–with Sarah. He mentioned taking her to visit Grandpa. Isn’t that usually your thing? Why would he call her
instead?”
Charlotte’s expression darkened. “Maybe it’s because Grandpa doesn’t like me. James is probably worried about his health and
thinks Sarah might be able to cheer him up. Grandpa does seem to like her.”
Lucy jumped at the opportunity. “Charlotte! You can’t let it slide like this. Sure, once or twice might seem harmless, but if this becomes a regular thing–using Grandpa as an excuse to see her–it’ll only get worse!”
“But Grandpa doesn’t seem to like me…” Charlotte murmured, her voice tinged with sadness.
“That’s exactly why you need to take action. The less he likes you, the more you need to show him how genuine you are.” Lucy’s.
tone turned conspiratorial. “I’m only telling you this for your own good. I really don’t want to see James and Sarah spending more time together.”
Charlotte looked uncertain but nodded. “Thanks, Lucy.”

“Of course, but I’ll need a favor in return.” Lucy’s eyes sparkled with mischief.
“What kind of favor?” Charlotte asked cautiously, gripping the fruit platter.
“From now on, let me know anytime James is planning to visit Grandpa.”
“Alright.”
That weekend, Sarah arrived at the Chancer estate, having set aside time to visit Grandpa. With Mia spending time with Zachary’s
family, Sarah had some breathing room and decided to make the trip.
She was surprised to find James already there.
She quirked a brow and said dryly, “Since when did you have so much free time? Weren’t you always busy with work and
networking?”
James gave a sheepish laugh. “I just wanted to spend more time with Grandpa lately.”
Richard’s face lit up as soon as he saw Sarah. “Sasa! You’re here! The housekeeper just brought fresh fruit–come, you’re in for a
treat.”
“Grandpa, I heard you haven’t been eating well. Is that true?” she asked, her voice warm and full of concern.
