Chapter 15
James’s face tightened with irritation. “I’m in a meet-”
“Another meeting, right?” Sarah cut him off, her voice turning cold. “Mr. Chancer, I can’t be waiting for you forever. If we’re getting divorced, stop dragging it out while planning your wedding. Playing the devoted groom while keeping me hanging – it’s getting pathetic,”
Sarah was done with Charlotte’s little power plays, done with this pointless connection to James.
She’d always been decisive – when she loved, she gave everything, and when it was over, she walked away clean.
She wasn’t deluded enough to think James’s hesitation meant he cared. She simply ranked last in everything that mattered to
him.
James gripped his phone, jaw clenched. Thinking of the man who’d driven her home, anger flared. “Drop the act, Sarah. You’re only in such a rush because you’ve found someone else.”
Sarah almost laughed at his absurdity. (1)
“Think what you want,” she said coolly. “It’s none of your business anymore. Besides, no one moved on faster than you. I’ll be at
the courthouse. After today, I won’t make it this easy again.”
She hung up before he could argue.
“Where to?” Scarlett asked, starting the car.
Sarah smiled, feeling lighter already. “The courthouse.”
Scarlett cheered.
Twenty minutes later, Sarah waited outside the courthouse when a text from Zachary came through, “About the apartment – talk
to Steven.”

Steven’s contact info followed.
His response was immediate, “Hey Sarah! Got a place right above Mia’s, same size, $4,000 a month. Interested?”
$4,000… for a luxury apartment in this part of the city? Steven had to be kidding. The place was easily worth triple that.
Before she could question the suspicious deal, James appeared. “Let’s get this over with,” he said curtly.
Sarah pocketed her phone and followed him inside. When the divorce papers were finally in her hands, she felt a weight lift.
It was done. Seven years of loving this man, officially over. 1
Outside, James caught her arm. After a long look, he said quietly, “You’ll get everything I promised. I’ll handle it this week.”
Sarah nodded, feeling nothing.

James hesitated, then added softly, “Don’t rush into anything with someone new just to spite me. Take care of yourself.”
“The best way you can take care of her is to disappear,” Scarlett cut in. “Are you kidding me? Yesterday your precious Charlotte’s mom and yours threw her out in the rain, got her sick, and now you’re playing concerned ex?”
Scarlett was done. “You’ve always counted on her being too nice to call you out. That house was supposed to be hers, she could be living there right now, instead of apartment hunting…
