Chapter 165
As Lucy left, a smirk played across her face she’d heard everything.
After classes ended, Zachary came to pick up Mia, and Sarah joined them for the ride home.
Since his birthday gala, they’d grown closer. Though neither had put their feelings into words, the spark between them was
undeniable.
Especially with Mia playing cupid at every opportunity.
“Sarah, my brother keeps calling just to ask about you. When I ask why he doesn’t call you himself, he clams up. He’s just too shy!” Mia teased.
“That’s ridiculous,” Zachary feigned annoyance.
“No, it’s not!” Mia leaned forward from the backseat, whispering loudly in Zachary’s ear. “Want to know Sarah’s secret?”
Sarah looked puzzled – what secret could she possibly have?
“Tell me,” Zachary said with a hint of amusement.
–
Mia wiggled her eyebrows. “When I visited Sarah’s office today, she was writing something your name, over and over again!”
Sarah’s eyes widened as she reached back to cover Mia’s mouth, her cheeks burning. “Stop making things up! That never happened.”
“I saw it with my own eyes!” Mia insisted, nodding emphatically at her brother.
Sarah remained silent, her face still flushed when they pulled up to the apartment building.
As soon as they parked, Mia bounded upstairs, deliberately leaving them alone.
“Mia must have been seeing things,” Sarah tried to explain.
Zachary shook his head. “My sister doesn’t lie. Why deny it? It makes me happy.”
Sarah’s blush deepened. “Well, you’re always asking her about me too, aren’t you? Why not just ask me directly?”
“I didn’t want to seem too forward.”
“I wouldn’t mind!” Sarah looked up, her eyes sparkling in the evening light.
Zachary leaned closer, near enough to see her eyelashes flutter nervously.
He’d been restraining himself since the day they met.
But now, this close, he could smell her jasmine shampoo, light perfume, and the subtle warmth of her skin.

Her bright eyes reflected his face in the soft glow of the street lights.
Zachary reached out, gently tilting her chin upward.
His fingertips brushed her lips with the lightest touch.
Sarah gazed at him, lost in his gentle eyes until his touch snapped her back to reality.
“What… what are you doing?” she stammered.
Caught off guard by her sudden awareness, he leaned in closer as she spoke.
Sarah felt him approaching and pushed him away. “You… you’re being too forward!”
She hurried inside, taking the elevator to her floor.
In her bathroom, she splashed cold water on her face, but Zachary’s handsome features kept appearing in her mind. Looking at her dripping reflection, she wondered how anyone could resist someone like him.
She touched her lips where his fingers had been, her heart pounding, her cheeks as red as summer roses.
She’d never experienced anything like this before. Even during three years of marriage, she’d never felt such electricity with James. Zachary was the first to make her feel this way.
Since meeting him, her heart had developed a habit of racing whenever he was near.
Try
as she might to control these feelings, they were impossible to suppress. After all, the heart wants what it wants.
