“Ahem, Mia…” Sarah said awkwardly.
The voice on the phone cut off abruptly. Seconds later, Sarah’s phone rang.
“Sarah, are you feeling better? I was just joking earlier, don’t take it seriously,” Mia said timidly.
Sarah laughed softly. “Much better. The fever’s gone.”
“That’s good, that’s good. I’ll hang up now.”
After her IV finished and she’d eaten her porridge, she took a nap. When she woke, she found Zachary dozing, his chin propped on his hand.
He must be exhausted after bringing her here at dawn and watching over her so long.
His sleeping face looked softer, less sharp. His eyelashes were long and thick. She reached out to touch them – so soft.
She traced his nose, his cheeks, his lips that had kissed her several times.
She’d wanted to do this since that night when he’d touched her lips.
Suddenly his eyes opened. As she tried to pull back, he caught her hand. “Weren’t you asleep?” she asked, breathing quickly.
“Light sleeper.” He’d been awake since she opened her eyes, curious what she’d do.
Sarah pulled her hand away, turned over, and covered herself with the blanket to sleep again.
At the police station, Grace suddenly changed her story. After insisting Lucy had masterminded everything, she now claimed Sarah had bribed her. When Zachary played the recording, Grace changed her story again, saying Zachary had forced her.
Mrs. Chancer was delighted, thinking Charlotte had convinced James to help. She even gave her a gold bracelet.
But Charlotte noticed James acting stranger. He’d zone out alone, even during meals.
When she spoke to him, it took him ages to respond.
That night’s embrace hadn’t reassured her – it made her more anxious.
When Sarah left the hospital, Zachary picked her up.
Since their heart–to–heart, Sarah felt awkward, avoiding his gaze. 1
She pretended to sleep the whole ride home. He’d only agreed to discharge her after two full days.
Back home, Sarah relaxed on her couch, glad to escape the hospital’s antiseptic smell.
“This feels so good,” she sighed.

Zachary set her medicine on the table. “Don’t forget these.”
He hesitated to leave, remembering that midnight call. “Sarah, I worry about you.”

Sarah felt touched. Only Mia and Scarlett had said that recently.
And her father…
“I’ll call you right away if anything happens.” So this was what it felt like to depend on someone.
“Call even if nothing’s wrong.” Zachary gave her a gentle look before leaving, his expression turning serious as he answered his
phone.
“Hello, when are you coming back?”
“Thirty minutes,” he said.
“Come straight to my study.” The authoritative voice puzzled him.
William never questioned his activities. Why summon him now?
He drove straight to the Reynolds estate and hurried to his grandfather’s study.
