Chapter 194
His eyes softened, taking in the faint perfume lingering in the room.
He lay back on the bed, surrounded by Sarah’s scent on the sheets.
Sarah’s heart raced as she stared at her panicked reflection, her face flushed. Trying to remember last night brought only blanks.
She splashed cold water on her face, finally calming down.
Quickly dressing, she discovered red marks on her neck!
What would Scarlett and Mia say when they saw? And Steven would never let her hear the end of it!
Her damp hair matched her disheveled state. She wanted to escape but couldn’t avoid Zachary’s gaze.
She couldn’t calm down, her cheeks burning hot enough to fry an egg. She’d spent the night in Zachary’s arms.
Leaving the bathroom, she found Zachary still in bed, watching her with an amused smile.
As she tried to flee, he caught her wrist.
“Why are you running?” he whispered teasingly.
Sarah frowned. What was he doing? Looking up, she met his deep brown eyes, full of warmth.
“I was drunk last night! I don’t remember anything! Let’s pretend nothing happened!” She yanked her hand away, turning to leave.
She straightened her back, hearing his laugh behind her. She trembled but wouldn’t turn around.
Zachary’s voice was low, hiding anger. “Sarah, do you realize what you’re saying?”
“I… I…”
“Look at me. You know what happened. Don’t say things like that.”
Sarah stood rigid, wishing the floor would swallow her.
“Don’t be silly. Remember what you said last night?” Zachary pulled her into his arms.
Sarah stayed quiet, face buried in his chest.
“You said you liked me,” he continued.
“Did not!” She instinctively denied, but he held her tighter.
“Sarah, I’m so happy. Really happy.”
His cologne surrounded her as she took a deep breath. “But what are we?”
Chapter 194
Lovers? Just a fling?
She didn’t know how to ask. He’d said he liked her, told James they were dating.
But though he’d said it often, he’d never said it seriously to her face.
Zachary steadied her. “Will you be my girlfriend? Let me protect you?”
Sarah’s heart raced. She bit her lip, not knowing where to look.
Zachary’s eyes dropped sadly. “It’s okay if you don’t want to answer now. I’ll wait.”
Her heart jumped at his hurt expression. “But I’m… divorced.”
Zachary studied her worried face. “Is that what’s been bothering you?”
He watched her intently. “Does it matter to you?”
“Me? No, but others care.” Zachary was a Reynolds heir – everyone watched him.
“Do you care what others think?”
“Of course not.”
Zachary smiled. “Neither do I.”
