Chapter 23
Lucy hadn’t expected Mia to defend Sarah so fiercely. Her face turned pale with rage as she glared at Sarah. “You really know how to play your cards, don’t you?”
Sarah’s eyes
narrowed. “Lucy, yes, I was naive to fall for your brother. But let’s be honest – your family had their own agenda pushing for that marriage. There should be a limit to how much you can twist reality.”
Lucy’s expression soured, especially as Sarah’s words reminded her of the real reason behind her brother James’s marriage to Sarah. Back then, her mother had actually supported it–partly because Richard Chancer genuinely liked Sarah and partly because they thought the marriage might provoke James’s ex, Charlotte, into returning
Realizing this, Lucy’s face contorted with frustration as she pointed at Sarah, shouting, “Twisting reality? If you’re so high and mighty, why don’t you return our family’s house? You left our family with that house like a scheming gold digger. What makes
you think you deserve it?”
Sarah’s voice turned cold. “Get it straight. “Your brother wasted three years of my life while I played perfect wife to your toxic family. Then the moment his ex showed up, he wanted out. I could have dragged him through a messy divorce court. The house?
Consider it compensation.”
Lucy was stunned. Was this really the same Sarah who once loved her brother with such pathetic devotion? She’d never imagined
Sarah could talk about him so indifferently.
In the past, her brother had been Sarah’s weak spot.
Sarah glanced at her watch, no longer interested in sparring with Lucy. She patted Mia on the shoulder. “Let’s go. You’ve got a
class to get to.
דו
Mia’s face lit up with a smile, and she took Sarah’s arm. “Yes, let’s go, Sarah.”
They walked off, both avoiding any mention of Sarah’s complicated past with the Chancer family.
Lucy’s face was ashen as she watched them leave. Her long nails dug into her palm in anger. Sarah–how dare she! Did she really
think cozying up to Mia would shield her from consequences? (2)
Fine, she thought. Just wait and see.
As Mia held onto Sarah’s arm, guiding her through campus, Sarah took a few moments to observe the lively young woman by her side. Although she’d agreed the previous night to let Mia visit her more often, she hadn’t been fully serious about it. But now, she genuinely wanted to help this girl. Still, she couldn’t understand what had caused someone so cheerful and bright to struggle with psychological issues.
They stopped at the base of the classroom building.
“Sarah, I’ll head to class now,” Mia said with a warm smile, waving her off. “Would it be alright if I met you for lunch?“”

Sarah nodded, touched by Mia’s friendliness. “I’ll wait by the east entrance to the dining commons- it’s closer to your building.”
Mia waved as she walked off, calling over her shoulder, “Great! And you can call me Mimi, if you like!”
Sarah smiled and waved back. “Alright, see you at lunch, Mimi.”
Meanwhile, Lucy, who enjoyed flaunting her Chancer family status, had her own clique on campus. One of them joined her on the way to class, just in time to witness Mia and Sarah saying their goodbyes.
Sarah caught sight of Lucy watching her but kept a calm expression, walking right past her toward the counselling office.
Once Sarah was out of earshot, Lucy turned to her friend. “Do you know what that woman’s doing at our school?”
iringly. “She’s our new
Unaware of the confrontation that had just happened, Lucy’s friend gazed after Sarah and replied admiringly, ” counsellor in Psychology. Everyone’s talking about her she’s young, gorgeous, and apparently brilliant. The guys in my study
group can’t stop gushing.”
