Chapter 39
Surprisingly, Lacy ignored Mia’s mockery, her smile growing even more eager. “Come on, Mia, why are we doing this? Our families have so many business dealings. Why defend someone like Sarah? She’s just a divorced nobody.”
Mia was disgusted. Lacy’s fawning behavior gave her the creeps.
Even Lindsey, standing behind Lacy, looked shocked at her friend’s behavior.
“Lucy, If you don’t leave now, I’ll have security escort you out,” Mia said flatly.
Though taken aback, Lacy maintained her smile, standing up casually. “Well, since you’re busy, I’ll get going. See you around!”
How shameless can she be?
After Lucy disappeared, Mia exhaled in relief, turning to Sarah. “Sarah, do you think Lucy’s lost her mind?”
Sarah pondered for a moment before shaking her head. “From what I know of her, she’s not one to back down quietly. Whatever she’s planning, it can’t be good.”
Once away from the booth, Lindsey couldn’t contain her curiosity. “Lucy, why were you so nice to Mia today?”
Usually, Lucy would retreat at the first sign of rejection from Mia, never staying to endure humiliation like this.
Lucy rolled her eyes. “You wouldn’t understand. I have my reasons.
She thought to herself: if Sarah could get Zachary’s attention through Mia, why couldn’t she? She was certainly better than Sarah young, unmarried, and Mia was the Reynolds‘ precious daughter. If she could get close to Zachary through Mia, she’d surely
catch his eye. Then that divorced Sarah would have nowhere to hide!
Lucy’s scheming was interrupted by the sight of Sarah and Mia’s easy friendship.
Jealousy surged through her.
Just wait and see!
After a busy afternoon of non–stop registrations – far more than previous years – it was already evening when the crowd finally dispersed.
Mia stretched, turning to Sarah. “It’s my grandfather’s birthday today, so I need to head back early. Can’t walk home with you today.”
Sarah nodded, helping the student council members pack up the tables and chairs. “Go ahead, I’ll be a while here anyway.”
Mia left reluctantly, making Sarah smile at her attachment.

After storing the registration forms in her office drawer, Sarah gathered her things and headed toward the main gate.
A Maserati was parked outside, drawing student attention.
While Adams University had plenty of wealthy students, a Maserati was still a rare sight.
Lucy and Lindsey were leaving campus, trash–talking Sarah, when Lindsey suddenly gasped, staring ahead. “Lucy, is that your brother?”
Lucy froze, following Lindsey’s gaze to indeed spot her brother.
How strange had hell frozen over?
Though James was her brother, he rarely involved himself in her affairs. What was he doing at the university?
