Chapter 49
When Mrs. Chancer recognized who had arrived, she couldn’t help but feeling nervous. Zachary Reynolds was the East Coast’s most powerful heir – not someone the Chancers could afford to offend.
She discreetly glanced at the blurry surveillance video, reassuring herself that the man in it was unidentifiable.
Perhaps Lucy was right – someone of his status would only be playing with someone like Sarah. How could such a distinguished man seriously consider a divorced woman?
This thought calmed her. Her Lucy was well–bred and highly educated, far superior to Sarah. Given the chance, Lucy could definitely secure someone as prestigious as Zachary.
Right now, her task was to completely discredit Sarah. Not only did she need to confirm the allegations of infidelity during marriage, but she also had to make Mr. Reynolds distance himself from Sarah. With so many people present and men being concerned about their reputation, Mr. Reynolds was unlikely to step forward to defend Sarah.
“Sarah practically threw herself at our family,” Mrs. Chancer grew bolder in the silence. “Heaven knows what tricks she used to manipulate my father–in–law into accepting such a daughter–in–law.”
Growing more confident, she continued, “After the divorce, she tried to extort property and money from us. I’ve never seen such a shameless woman. Now we find out about her affair – what man could tolerate such humiliation?”
“Someone of such low moral character must be fired. This affects more than just Adams‘ reputation.”
Zachary stood to the side, his striking features half–hidden in shadow, his dark eyes concealing a dangerous fury.
His presence was impossible to ignore.
The administrators exchanged uneasy glances. They didn’t believe these accusations – Sarah’s excellent work spoke for itself.
With Zachary present, no one dared speak, afraid of saying the wrong thing.
Seeing Zachary’s apparent indifference, Mrs. Chancer grew visibly smug. She was determined to get Sarah fired and reclaim the Chancers‘ property. She wouldn’t rest until then.
“So this is the Chancer family’s idea of proper behavior.” Zachary’s deep voice carried an overwhelming authority.
All eyes turned to him.
“If I’m not mistaken, that video is from the St. Ritz, and that blurred figure is me.
As his words sank in, the administrators looked between Zachary and Sarah in surprise, shocked by their connection.
Sarah looked up at Zachary, her troubled expression clearing as warmth spread through her chest.
She hadn’t expected him to stand up for her so unhesitatingly, unconcerned about the accusations.

Any other man would have distanced himself from Mrs. Chancer’s accusations – after all, who would want to be associated with a
woman with such “scandalous behavior.”
“This is a first for me – a simple dinner with friends twisted into evidence of an affair.” Zachary’s cold gaze settled on Mrs.
Chancer, his presence radiating frost.
