Chapter 53
“Mrs. Chancer, Lucy, what happened?” Charlotte asked. Though unsure of the details, she guessed it involved Sarah – only Sarah could upset them this much.
Mrs. Chancer set down her jewelry, her face dark with anger, looking no different from a common market gossip.
Charlotte raised an eyebrow but said nothing.
“It’s all that wretched Sarah’s fault. She made me lose face in front of everyone…” Mrs. Chancer recounted the day’s events,
seeing no fault in her own actions.
Charlotte understood – they’d tried to scheme against Sarah but got publicly humiliated instead.
Lucy quickly sat beside Charlotte, linking arms affectionately. “Charlotte, you’re so much smarter than us. Can’t you help us figure something out?”
Mrs. Chancer glanced at her daughter, her mind still fixated on the property and money, growing more resentful by the minute.
“Charlotte, Sarah was married to James for three years without producing a child. After the divorce, James inexplicably gave her $8 million and several properties. That was meant to be your wedding gift! I can’t believe he gave it to Sarah!”
Her anger bubbled over.
Charlotte’s expression flickered strangely before smoothing out. She’d known about the properties but not the exact amount –
James had never mentioned the details.
Eight million dollars!
Plus several luxury properties!
“Charlotte, we can’t outsmart that calculating woman. She used to act so submissive around us, like she accepted everything willingly. But look how quickly she showed her true colors after the divorce, humiliating us like this!” Mrs. Chancer sipped her
tea, trying to calm down.
Charlotte smiled faintly, internally disgusted.
These women spent their days plotting petty schemes. It was embarrassing, but she needed their support to join the family.
Still, that wedding gift was tempting.
Eight million plus several East Coast properties – nearly thirty million total.
Even for their family, that was significant.
“We’re family. I don’t care about material things. I just hate seeing you both upset – we’ll be family soon, after all.” Charlotte maintained her gracious attitude, careful not to appear too interested in the money lest they think her greedy.

Chapter 33
Mrs. Chancer, believing Charlotte’s act of kindness, took the bait.
“Charlotte, I knew you were sensible, unlike Sarah who only gives us grief.” Mrs. Chancer moved closer, taking Charlotte’s hands,
visibly pleased. “Since you don’t care about the money, once I get it back, I plan to give it to Lucy for her trust fund. What do you
think?”
