Chapter 56
Sarah looked up puzzled as an invitation appeared before her, finding Mia’s sweet, delicate face. She smiled helplessly.
“Sarah, we’re hosting a big gala tomorrow. Please come with me? I get nervous with too many people around.”
Sarah glanced at the invitation lying on her desk, her expression tinged with complexity. She knew exactly what a Reynolds family invitation meant. Lately, too much attention had been focused on her at school, with endless rumors and debates swirling around. It was a chaotic time.
Since handing over her company to her cousin, most people saw her as a fallen heiress with no backing.
Attending the Reynolds gala now might spark unnecessary drama.
“Mia, I have other commitments tomorrow, so I can’t attend. If you’re feeling anxious, find a quiet corner to stay in. You can always call me if you need anything.”
Disappointment was evident on Mia’s face. She knew Sarah wasn’t someone who could be pressured, nor was she after their family’s wealth.
“Sarah, you really won’t come with me? How can you leave me trembling alone in a corner?”
“Pfft!” Sarah laughed. “Sweetie, are you trying to play the pity card now? I truly have things to take care of and can’t make it. I’m
sorry.”
She knew nobody would dare bully the Reynolds heiress – not unless they wanted to end their social life by crossing Zachary’s
sister.
Besides, the guests would all be high society members with impeccable manners. There was nothing to worry about.
“Okay then, sorry to bother you.” Mia left with the invitation.
Watching her dejected figure leave, Sarah felt an inexplicable discomfort in her heart, strange and unfamiliar.
Outside, Mia immediately called her brother, her voice heavy with disappointment.
“Zac, I invited Sarah to our gala, but she said she’s busy tomorrow and can’t come.”
“Zac, you’re always so clever – can’t you help me convince her? Please?”
Mia’s face lit up at the thought. If her brother could get Sarah to come, she’d create every opportunity for them. She’d love to
have Sarah as her sister–in–law.
Zachary just chuckled. This was so like her – refusing entry to an event others would kill to attend.
“I’ll handle it.”
At eight that evening, Sarah finally left school, having stayed late working on the psychology competition arrangements due to

the high number of registrants.
As she reached her building, she spotted a tall figure leaning against a car in the darkness, smoke curling around him.
