Chapter 90
Sarah explained softly, “It’s useless. They can’t afford to offend the Chancer family. Following their instructions for news coverage means a big paycheck. Going against them risks getting fired. Which would you choose?”
She’d understood this when the reporters started asking questions. That’s why she stopped paying attention after Lucy changed the subject – tomorrow, people would only know what Lucy wanted them to know.
“What?!” Mia hugged Sarah’s arm unhappily. “If I’d known, I wouldn’t have watched the drama. I should have gone with you to invite Dr. Lawrence. Did she agree?”
“She basically declined. Her time is precious, but I did give her the students‘ papers about her theories to review.” That was at least something positive.
Mia looked at Sarah worriedly. “Are you sad? What about the school leaders?”
“It’s fine. I tried my best and extended the invitation. That’s what matters.” Sarah patted her head.
She never saw rejection as a bad thing. Besides, she could run a great competition even without Jane.
“Don’t worry! You’ve still got me, Sarah!”
Back at the apartment building, they ran into Scarlett.
Scarlett immediately recognized Zachary’s car. Loaded with shopping bags, she confronted Sarah as she got out. “Got you! Sarah,
you’re choosing men over friends!”
Her voice was loud, showing no mercy to Sarah’s dignity. Worse still, Zachary had just stepped out and heard everything. He
calmly greeted Scarlett
“Hello.”
“Hello, Mr. Reynolds!” Scarlett smiled, then quickly turned to threaten Sarah. “Spill it! Where were you two sneaking off to? L
called you so many times!”
Phone calls?
Sarah froze, patting her formal dress. Her phone wasn’t with her or in the car.
“I think I left my phone at the office.” She remembered not taking it to the party.
“Get it tomorrow – don’t change the subject! Where were you?”
Mia hopped out of the car. “I was there too! We went to Lucy’s birthday party.”
CRASH!
Scarlett dropped all her bags in shock. “What?”

She stared at Sarah in disbelief, feeling her forehead. “You’re not feverish… You actually went to that woman’s birthday party? She’s always causing trouble for you, yet you rushed to celebrate with her? She must have bullied you again, right? Wait – why would she even invite you?”
Faced with this barrage of questions, Sarah didn’t know where to start.
“It’s complicated – hard to explain quickly. Why didn’t you go inside? You have the code.”
Scarlett wouldn’t let go. “You don’t still have feelings for that jerk, do you?”
She quickly glanced at Zachary. “Of course not! That scumbag!”
“Scarlett, I know everything! Let me tell you, Lucy totally embarrassed herself today. Everyone saw her inappropriate video!” pulled Scarlett away, deliberately creating space for her brother and Sarah.
“Tell me everything!” Scarlett followed Mia upstairs.
Sarah looked at the scattered bags over a dozen of various sizes. She wondered how Scarlett had managed to carry them all.
