“You–1” Lucy raised her hand in anger, ready to strike.
Sarah took a step back, her tone calm but firm. “I’d think twice if I were you. Last time, I let you off the hook and didn’t call the
police. If you dare lay a hand on me now, I’ll settle both old and new scores with you.
Lucy hesitated, her hand hovering mid–air, before finally lowering it. “The Chancer family does not welcome you!”
Bang!
The door slammed shut in Sarah’s face. She glanced at it briefly before turning to
leave.
Her next stop was to replace her lost phone. After getting a new SIM card and purchasing a new device, she immediately checked
the school forum. The chaos sparked by that phone call was evident. The psychology students, practically fans of Jane Lawrence, were already planning to print banners to welcome her.
Sarah tried calling Jane’s assistant again, only to receive the same response: “She doesn’t have time.”
Even the academic papers she had submitted to Jane seemed to have vanished into thin air, with no updates at all.
After weighing her options, she decided to head to the principal’s office.
Dean Larson beamed at the sight of her. “Miss Sanders, you’ve truly outdone yourself! Securing Jane Lawrence for our event? The
psychology students must be so grateful!”
“Dean,” Sarah began, her expression serious, “I came here to discuss this matter.”
“Go on ”
“Jane Lawrence might not actually come.”
“What?!” Dean Larson’s hand shook, almost spilling his tea.
“I did meet her yesterday,” Sarah explained. “I expressed my desire for her to be a judge at the competition. However, she mentioned that she had already declined similar invitations before, I understood it as her polite way of saying no.”
Dean Larson’s brows furrowed deeply. “Miss Sanders, this isn’t a matter to take lightly. If she declined, why did you confirm over the phone this morning that she had agreed?”
Sarah’s tone darkened. “That’s the problem. My phone disappeared during the party yesterday. I thought I might have left it in my office, but it wasn’t there either. Someone must have deliberately taken it to cause trouble for me.”
The dean sighed heavily. “Why didn’t you inform us sooner? The board of directors already got wind of this early this morning. They’ve even arranged for reporters to attend the competition.”
Sarah’s surprise was evident. “The board has known since this morning?”

“Yes, and the longer we delay addressing this, the more students‘ expectations will build. It’ll only become harder to manage the fallout later. I’ll speak to the board to explain the situation, but the school leadership–well, I’ll leave that explanation to you.”
“Thank you,” Sarah said, nodding in understanding.
Just as she was about to leave, Dean Larson called after her, his voice suddenly tense. “Wait!”
“What’s wrong, Sir?”
His expression grew grim as he held out his phone to show her the screen. “It’s too late.”
Sarah’s eyes scanned the screen, which displayed a breaking news headline: ‘Renowned Psychologist Jane Lawrence to Judge A- University’s Psychology Competition.”
And the source of the leak? The Chancer family.
Her mind whirred as she replayed yesterday’s events, analyzing the reactions of Charlotte and Lucy. Lucy’s immediate anger at Sarah’s question about the phone seemed genuine, even claiming Sarah just wanted an excuse to get closer to James. That likely
ruled her out
That left Charlotte. But when Sarah saw her today, Charlotte hadn’t seemed particularly suspicious. Could it really have been her?
