Chapter 10
After saying that, he picked up the toolbox and turned to leave. At the elevator, he paused.
“Winnie got back together with her ex–husband. There’s nothing going on between us.”
“And Bexley… I’m not giving up on you. I won’t pressure you again. I’ll wait.”

His eyes were steady, filled with a kind of stubborn, self–punishing persistence.
I said nothing, watching the elevator doors close.
Before bed, I got a message from Nickler.
“The project’s finished. I’m heading back to the States. Wish you happiness for the rest of your
life.”
“Safe travels,” I replied.
Then I turned off my phone.
But the vibrations didn’t stop.
Messages kept coming in, almost all from Eiden.
He had become unexpectedly talkative, constantly reminding me to wear more layers because it was getting colder, to bring an umbrella for the rain…
For the first time,
I realized just how persistent Eiden could be.
He wasn’t the kind to let go easily,
He would keep appearing in the little moments of my life, in his own way.
And as for Nickler, after letting go of everything that used to weigh on him,
He had returned to his own path.
As for me, I was no longer caught up in who loved me or whose expectations I needed to meet.
I could go for a walk on my own.
Watch a movie slowly by myself.
It felt free. It felt light.

As for what might happen in the future, how long Eiden would wait, whether I’d soften again, or meet someone new…none of that mattered.
What mattered was this: The version of me in this moment, who was happy.
That was the only answer that truly mattered.
The hallway light was bright, like a warm, soft yellow sea. I buried my face in my blanket and fell
into a deep, dreamless sleep.
Tomorrow would be another beautiful day.
What I didn’t know was that Eiden hadn’t left.
He was still sitting in his car downstairs.
Dust from the lightbulb change still lingered on his fingertips. He didn’t bother wiping it off. He just smiled quietly.
Eiden pulled out a pack of cigarettes, intending to light one.
But he remembered I didn’t like it, so he put it away.
He used to think what he felt for me was just habit.
That we were simply a good match.
But after I left, the empty space in his heart hurt more than he ever expected.
And it wasn’t until Nickler showed up that he truly realized it that loving someone had shoved him forward, forcing him to fall headfirst into emotions he’d never understood.
That was the first time he had ever tasted jealousy.
His phone lit up.
It was a message from his mother, asking how he was doing.
Eiden replied: “I’m waiting for her.”
Then he turned off his phone and murmured.
