Chapter 16 Who Saved Calbert
Natalie took Seryna to the most famous luxury mall in Calford.
As they walked through the glass doors, Seryna recalled visiting
a few times in her past life.
She used to watch Tehila try on dress after dress, never
touching one herself.
Their parents only cared about power and profit, and Seryna
had been too naive to see that.
It took dying to learn how to live clear–eyed.
Over the past month, she’d avoided every trap she once fell into,
including Jeremiah’s bullying.
He was coming back tonight. This time, she’d teach him a lesson.
Lost in thought, Seryna didn’t notice the man passing by.
Tall and straight–backed, he had a commanding presence. When
he saw her face, a flash of surprise crossed his. He turned for
another look to be sure.
This was Calbert Hatfield, heir to the most powerful dynasty,

one of Calford’s four major forces. He operated freely on both
sides of the law.
Just hearing his name made people shiver.
His six bodyguards and assistant, Keenan Avery, stopped with
him.
Seryna stepped further inside without glancing his way. His
dark eyes narrowed.
With that striking nose and the faint, hypnotic smile, Calford
commanded attention.
No one dared ignore him, except Seryna.
He figured she was pretending not to know him. That only
made her more intriguing.
Keenan had never seen Calbert smile before, and it made his
blood run cold.
Then Calbert turned to him. “Find out who she is. Get me
everything in one hour.”
His voice was low and controlled, like he’d been waiting for her
call.
Keenan blinked, surprised that Calbert might be interested in a

woman for once.
But after a moment, he pushed the thought aside. More likely,
this was about the woman who had saved him.

Calbert left her a note that night, but she never called.
“Yes, Mr. Hatfield. Right away!”
Calbert gave a small nod, still watching Seryna.
“Let’s go.” His gaze shifted to the window, a faint smile on his
lips.
Keenan followed, still stunned.
He didn’t know why, but Calbert was giving off fool–for–love
energy.
Then Keenan glanced back one last time, but Seryna was gone.
Since Calbert owned the mall, Keenan made a quick call to the
manager and asked for immediate access to the surveillance
footage.
By the time they reached the car, the video was already waiting.
He handed his phone to Calbert.

Light streamed through the window, soft on his sculpted
features, but he stayed cold.
He looked down, waiting for news about Seryna.
“Mr. Hatfield, check the video. She’s on the second floor,”
Keenan said. “Looking at dresses.”
Calbert finally glanced up. He still looked good, despite the dark
circles from too many late nights.
He tapped the screen and watched.
She had the kind of beauty that blew people away–confident
and timeless. He couldn’t look away.
Even through the screen, something about her felt familiar and
unsettling, as if something darker lay just beneath.
He rubbed his jaw. His voice came out softer than Keenan was
used to. “Get me everything on her. Childhood to now.”
“She’s the one who saved you?” Keenan asked in a shaking voice.
He figured probably not since she had just ignored Calbert.
But Calbert nodded. “Yes.“”
Then he turned to the driver, eyes narrowing. “Take me to
