10 Chapter 10
Time ticked by, second by agonizing second.
Alexander stood frozen to the spot for what felt like an eternity.
Finally, mustering the last shred of his sanity, he took out his phone and ordered his men to start taking out the trash.
He had his people investigate all of Madison and her mother’s secrets.
He compiled evidence of their wicked deeds over the years–including framing me, manipulating him, and harming others–into a detailed report. He then sent it anonymously to their company’s human resources department, all social media platforms, and their entire circle of friends.
In less than a day, Madison lost her job and all her social connections. She and her mother, Linda, could no longer show their faces in New York City.
They had no choice but to pack up and move to some remote, forgotten town, completely stripped of their status in high society.
After ensuring all of this was done, Alexander hung up the phone. He walked over to me and, without a moment’s hesitation, fell to his knees.
His voice trembled as he spoke to me:
“Blair, I know I’m the biggest, most blind fool on this earth–a complete animal.
I also know you’re utterly disappointed in me, that you wish you’d never met me in your entire life…
But I can’t… I just can’t accept breaking up with you.”
I was wrong, Blair. I truly know I was wrong…”
“For the sake of the ten years we loved each other, I’m begging you, please give me one last chance to make things right, okay?”
Alexander wept. He wept like the eight–year–old boy I once knew, the one who’d watched helplessly as I fell from a tree trying to get his model airplane back for him.
It was as if he were facing the end of the world. His whole body trembled uncontrollably, and large tears rolled ceaselessly down his chin,
In that moment, I knew with absolute certainty that he truly regretted it.
But so what?
My expression was serene as I looked down on him, saying nonchalantly,

“Alexander, how many times do I have to say it before you understand?
I haven’t had any feelings for you for a long, long time.
The man I truly love now is Nicholas.”
As the words left my lips, I saw Nicholas–who’d been feigning calm but was secretly terrified I’d soften–relax his death grip on my sleeve.
He raised a hand to hide the triumphant smile I knew was spreading across his face.
My heart softened for him. Feeling utterly content, I completely ignored Alexander’s devastated, heartbroken expression. I smiled, took Nicholas’s hand, and we both stood to leave.
Halfway to the door, Alexander called out to me in a hoarse voice,
“I’m sorry.
Nine hours after he said he was sorry.
Alexander took an overdose of sleeping pills in our old villa on Long Island.
Whether it was intentional or not, he wasn’t found in time.
He didn’t die, but the overdose left him in a long–term coma.
On the day the hospital issued its third critical condition notice for Alexander, Nicholas and I were on a private jet, flying to Italy for our honeymoon.
Inside the lavish cabin, which had everything one could possibly desire, two figures–one large, one small–were huddled together, shivering as they watched a horror movie.
As we watched, Nicholas started kissing me, hugging me, and lifting me up high again.
Oh, honestly.
That’s just how newlyweds are.
Even if someone has a change of heart in the future, at least the sweetness and happiness of this very moment are real.
As long as you strive to live your life as a boundless wilderness where you are free to do as you please. What we call happiness will find its way to you when you least expect it..
