chapter234
Elvin sat beside her, watching her unhappiness with a pang of helplessness.
Under the table, he took her cold hand. “Stop drinking. You’ll get drunk.”
Bianca gently pried his fingers away, offering a faint smile. “It’s fine.”
Her tolerance was good; this little wine wouldn’t affect her.
She simply hated being in this environment.
Across the table, Blair noticed Bianca’s continuous drinking and frowned.
Just as he prepared to stop her, Diane leaned close, clutching his arm. “Blair, I need the restroom.”
Blair’s eyes snapped away from Bianca. “Let’s go. I’ll take you.”
Diane stood, Blair rising instantly beside her.
He shadowed her every step, one hand hovering protectively near her elbow as if bracing for a stumble.
Bianca lifted her gaze just enough to see Blair and Diane walking away together.
Inseparable. Always side by side.
The sight struck her as bitterly ironic.

After Blair and Diane left, Bianca’s face showed a jumble of complicated emotions.
Graham sat across from her, easily spotting her disappointment, and felt an inexplicable satisfaction.
Meanwhile, Elijah noticed Bianca’s apparent sadness and found himself wishing she’d divorce Blair sooner.
As for Elvin, he sensed Bianca’s unhappiness and grew upset himself- even annoyed and angry.
He regretted his past indecisiveness and resented that she still pined for Blair.
Around the table, everyone sat in silence, each lost in their own thoughts.
Elsewhere, Jacob had just finished toasting two tables when his phone
rang.
Glancing at the screen, he told the next table: “Excuse me, I need to take this call. I’ll be right back.”
No one dared question his departure.
In the backyard, Jacob answered to hear Hollis’s voice:
“Well?”
Smiling at the old man’s impatience, Jacob replied: “Uncle, Blair and your granddaughter–in–law are doing fine. You can rest assured.”
Hollis laughed heartily: “Really?”
“Absolutely,” Jacob confirmed. “Blair not only drank for her but

personally escorted her to the restroom.”
The old man’s laughter turned brighter: “That’s good then. Seems the boy genuinely cares for her.”
Chuckling along, Jacob asked: “Uncle, I heard your granddaughter–in- law studies medicine?”
“She does,” Hollis acknowledged.
“Impressive,” Jacob remarked respectfully. “That’s a demanding field.”
Hollis sounded dismissive: “It’s alright. Go entertain your guests—I’ve chess to attend.”
Returning to the banquet hall, Jacob saw Blair and Diane reenter from the restroom.
This time, Blair followed behind Diane, holding her dress train without hesitation. He bent willingly, performing what others might see as subservient acts.
Bianca witnessed their return–but before she could focus, a hand suddenly covered her eyes.
She knew it was Elvin’s hand.
Across the table sat those she’d once strained to please, people who now seemed to relish her humiliation.
Elvin and his friends owed her nothing; she held no value to them.
Yet they showed her kindness, even helping salvage her dignity.
Tears welled in Bianca’s eyes at the thought–though Elvin mistook them for Blair.

Elvin felt both annoyed and aching sympathy. Grabbing her hand, he commanded: “Come with me.”
As Bianca stumbled after him, Davis called out: “The courses aren’t finished. Aren’t you staying?”
Elvin held Bianca’s hand without turning his head, his tone sharp. “Skipping meals won’t kill you, but staying around trash just might.”
Davis didn’t stop them. Instead, he nodded approvingly. “That’s my man. Well done.”
Elvin paid no attention to Davis‘ words, focused solely on getting Bianca away.
He led her to a swing set on the lawn after leaving the banquet hall.
Neither sat on the swing.
Neither spoke.
The strange silence stretched between them.
Finally, Elvin whirled around, gripping Bianca’s shoulders. “Tell me what you ever saw in Blair Avery?”
