Chapter 15
Traumatized by the drastic family changes, Paulette refused to talk for at long time no matter how hard the Chapman family tried.
As Maxine was thinking of getting Paulette a shrink, she noticed that Paulette had grown fond of their neighbor’s dog.
It was a big golden retriever that played with a ball in the yard every day.
Little Paulette would stand outside the yard, watching with a smile.
Given this, instead of getting her a shrink, Maxine decided to observe her
for a while.
One day, as Paulette crouched next to the fence, she locked eyes with the golden retriever inadvertently. She instinctively shuddered, but what she felt the most was curiosity.
So, she didn’t move and just tilted her head to continue to look it in the
eye.
Until someone pulled it aside.
She looked up and saw an unbelievably good–looking face.
Jeremiah was looking down at her. He said with an amused glint in his eyes, “Are you trying to steal my dog?”
She shook her head hastily. “N–No. I’m not.”
“Then why were you staring at him? You made him shy.
She said nothing while widening her eyes, thinking, “Will dogs be shy?”

Amused by the cute look on her face, Jeremiah chuckled and wanted to tease her even more. He crooked a finger and said, “Wanna touch him?”
She was stunned for a second before nodding.
“Come here then. Touch him.”
Yet, as soon as he opened the door, he let the dog lunge at her. Caught off guard, she fell backward.
Terrified, she burst into tears at once.
Maxine heard her cries and hurried over. Upon seeing the tears on her face, Maxine breathed a sigh of relief.
“Paulette has never cried. I’m so glad she finally did. Thank you,
Jeremiah.”
From that day on, Maxine asked Jeremiah to spend more time with Paulette together with his dog.
Paulette, however, had always seen Jeremiah as an enemy.
As they grew up, she no longer remembered when they had patched things up. Later, when he went abroad, she saw him off at the airport.
He was already a head taller than her.
Staring at her, he stroked her face gently.
Then he said, his voice low, “Grow up fast, Paula.”
Not wanting to be sentimental, she patted his hand away and urged, “If you don’t go, you’ll miss the flight.”
He sighed imperceptibly, “That’d be great.”

“What?”
She curled her lip. “Then you wouldn’t be able to leave.”
“Would that be a bad thing?”
”
Before she could say anything, he shook his head and added, “Paulette, you’d better miss me.”
After saying this, he strode to security without looking back, not knowing that she watched his retreating figure for a long, long time.

After giving Paulette a massage, Annabelle flexed her wrists and complained, “Gosh, those bruises! What the heck is wrong with Nelson? How could he ignore you while fussing over Patricia? She’s barely even hurt!”
Paulette shrugged. “It makes sense. She’s his girlfriend.”
A bit surprised, Annabelle arched an eyebrow. After observing the look on Paulette’s face for a while, she was certain that Paulette wasn’t upset and said, “You’re probably right. Well, who cares? You have Jeremiah.
“Hey, what would you like to eat? It’ll be my treat.”
Paulette was thinking about treating Annabelle, so she said, “I wanna thank you. Let me.”
Annabelle blinked. “Let’s make it Jeremiah’s treat.”
Slightly stunned, Paulette then agreed, “Why not?”
They went to the mall while chatting happily. After the meal, Annabelle. really called Jeremiah and asked him to pay.

Paulette was a bit guilty. Thinking that they hadn’t seen each other in two years, she decided to buy him a gift.
Looking at her face radiating vibrant energy, Annabelle teased, “Is there any gift better than you?”
“Anna…”
Paulette pouted while glancing at Annabelle. “About me and Jeremiah… It’s not what you think.”
